Rate my photography skills (pic)

Ok, I picked up a camera a while back and started playing around with it. Should I continue shotting or is it time to put my camera up on Ebay.
What sort of tips can you give to a newbie photographer.

It's a little over exposed, if you can't adjust it on the flash unit, I always put some very thin paper in front og the flash light. I use rolling papers for cigarettes, works great.

looks good, I always liked taking pictures with lots of white, especially snow, or lots of different colors, the babe looks like a very nice person, probably causes she has clothes on.

You got a bit further to go. but not to bad so far.

Shooting into snow is a nightmare job and you did it all right.

The other picture lacks the contact I would expect if you were shooting a girlfriend.

Try to put your relationship into a photo. Not easy but doable.

You have a fantastic camera, but your eye needs work.
Find a huge group of flowers - take a picture of *one*. Make it the best picture you can possibly think of... the angle, the focus (like making the other blurry and it stands out?), the way the light is playing on it... pick ONE and take a picture of it.

Now, find another huge group of flowers that are a different color. Again, pick ONE... but change something in the way you approach taking the pic.

Do this with as many different groups of flowers that you can, then take the pics home and compare them.
Using the different colors you can easily identify what it was you were doing in that picture that makes it different from the other pictures. (This is why you don't just keep shooting the same flower different ways.)

Identify what methods worked best to make the best pictures.

Keep doing this with different subjects... practice, practice, practice until you can look at a subject and see it from all of those different methods, and hopefully know which one of those will look best.

PRACTICE.
If you can't do it with flowers and can only do it with your girlfriend, then have her sit in the same exact spot with the same exact lighting conditions, etc - but in each shot she changes shirts. Again, you need something to help you identify one method you were using versus another method you were using.

Aside from the windows' glare, that's a great pic - it's more personal, we feel like we know her a little bit through it.
(Windows are usually bad *in* a pic unless you are working with them purposely.)
Your lighting on the subject is better in this one too, she's lit up without being washed out.

Honestly, I wish my hubby's eye for pics was as good as yours already is... he's got a TON of work to do just to take decent pics.

And I wish I could take pics in the daytime. The only time we can shoot here is when the kids are in bed... meaning nasty indoor lighting (I don't have Dean's plethora of umbrella lights, lol.)

I'm kinda late to this thread... but I know the look you're going for. I like the pic... the girl's cute and imperfections is what makes amateur photography. Trust me... this works because it's real! I've been doing it that way for almost 4yrs... good job
