About this "GFY Attack Posse" thing...

There's an alarming vigilante/lynchmob mentality that's surfaced lately here that I feel may end up harming us all, as a commununity. Though well-intentioned and on the side of truth, law and justice, this small group of hotshot cowboys (who are actually arguing over "claimed kills" at this point) are failing to realize the full effect their recklessness could have.

We're all aware of stolen image/password trading sites and the harm they do our industry. I'm certain we can all agree that we're talking about fraudelent, illegal behavior. And I know how frustrating it must be to see one closed down and another two pop up to replace it. However, there are certain guidelines to follow and common sense has to be used when dealing with them.

Stirring up a hornets nest might be considered fun by some but it's not a welcome practice in the middle of a family picnic. It's one thing to bring these sites to the attention of the forum, it's a whole other ballgame when these boards are used to stage raids against other communities. And the bottom line is, I don't think the majority of us are ready to play that game.

Another hotlinkin' message board is not about reporting theives, a small group from here decided to take someone's report and organize a raiding party. Because of this, their forums are now closed to new registrations. This effectively stops anyone else here from finding out if their passwords or stolen images are being bandied about there.

The more serious issue is that these actions by a few could end up adversly affecting these forums as a whole. Internet community wars are not fun and games.

The way I see it, your group certainly did not get this site closed down last night. All you did was have them stop registrations, which happens to be required to access their forums. When they do re-open, they'll probably be squeaky clean as well as moved their activities off board. In that case, the people that would've been in a position to (and know how to) write effective DMCA's have been hamstrung because of your shenanigans.

But then again, the main issue is that you're doing this macho acting out with a direct link back to here. Password trading sites are periphial to the warez groups and I don't think DDOS attacks should become a regular feature of this forum because of your recklessness.

The Site is closed, I just spent the last hour on the phone with the host, the site is still up but NO ONE can make any posts whatsoever. Reasoning for this, so everyone who has been hotlinked or has stolen content on that board can take care of evidence gathering if they need too.

The site will be permanently removed from coffecup.com servers by 12am tonight eastern time. I have that both in email and on AIM from Jason, Coffecup.com Head Abuse Technician.

Passwords are what subscribers recieve when they PURCHASE a non transferable entry into a PAY site. Hence, it is giving away something for free that has monetary value, hence, it is called "Theft of Services" anything else guys?

And how long you been in this industry? I ran multiple paysites in my day, never ever was password sites a problem, people posted a password, security kicks in and the pass is dead plain and simple. If you run paysites you would certainly know how to protect them and to use them to your benefit.

I agree. This issue was discussed to death years ago. It's silly. Password sites can be defeated with proper security measures, AND you can profit from them too.

I don't condone it by any means, but it's nothing to get crazy about.

Hi guys, could we get back to the main issue here please?

There are two different types password sites- those simply with listings, which are usually set up by the big players to pull traffic, and community forums that have a lot of interaction amongst the users. The first is easy to deal with, if your site is compromised on one of them, you simply ask to be left alone and they won't use any username/password pairs from your sites anymore. In fact, the one and only time I had to deal with a password list site, the fellow was quite apologetic about the whole thing and offered to pay for any bandwidth overages I might have incurred from the listing.

Community forums are another thing entirely. Because of the interaction within the group, supplying more compromised passwords and stolen content becomes a way to make a name for oneself. This is definitely a huge problem and the question is: How do we deal with these community forums that have gone this direction?

My position is that, as a community itself, GFY should not condone messing with them directly. Post the URL of these places and let us know where they're at, yes. Bemoan the fact that they exist, yes. But if you're planning to attack these communities and brag about it, do it off the forums. Otherwise, a couple of reckless hot heads are going to bring unnecessary heat down on not only the forums and everyone participating here, but onto Lensman and adult.com as well.

Nobody did anything but file complaints with the hosts and maybe post a few pics and comments on their sites.As far as I know nobody did any img sourcing or any ddos attacks or attempted to hack in their database.
Sure you can be a wallflower and sit back and start moaning about what if.
This problem certainly isn't going to go away without some of the troops to go in their and just make a pressance known.
I don't run paysites and I'm sure most everybody has protection.
It just fucking irks the hell out of me,some of my buddies shit are posted and or hot linked and then people try to justify what should be done.
Fuck em, if they want to break the rules,then they can feel the wrath of angry webmasters.

I'm in entire agreement with everything you said, but with one exception-

If GFY allows the harboring and support of "troops" that raid other communities, we're going to end up in community wars that no one will win. It's not too much to ask that you and the few other like-minded members take your bravado and derring do off board to avoid that. When you go through a link to these sites from this forum, register and start acting out, there's a direct path back to here. When you make references on those sites to GFY, there's a direct path back to here.

If you feel that strongly about what you're doing, do so as individuals and stop trying to carry the banner of this community is what I'm saying.
