The US had no real reason to invade, the financial one will soon fall away, however Iran did and if they had known the truth they might of invaded.
Saddam played a dangerous game and lost, he tried to bluff to his neighbors that he was still a force to be reckoned with, to get respect or fear. In truth his army was useless, most of the tanks and big guns were useless.

The whole "fear of an Iranian invasion" theory really falls down when you consider that the US was in the north and the south of iraq and Iran would never give the US a reason to crush them (by invading iraq)
