LiteOn, a relatively well-known Asian electronics brand, has released a MPEG-4 capable stand-alone DVD player at the CeBit expo in Hannover.
The player will compete against a similiar player from Danish Kiss, DP-450, which was released in last year. LiteOn's player, called LVD-2001, uses a MPEG-4 decoder chip from "notorious" Sigma Designs (the guys who violated XviD's GPL license). The chip used in the player is Sigma's EM8500. According to various sources, the player should be capable of playing pure MPEG-4 videos that are AVI wrapped (such as DivX v5.xx and XviD files) and also almost-MPEG-4 files such as DivX v3.11alpha and DivX v4.x files.

Truth is almost all dvd players can handle divx decoding once you update the firmware. Finding the firmware ISO's on the other hand can be trickyComment

This is the tip of the iceberg. The guys here are working on some really spiffy stuff here. For content guys out there, also notice that part of certification is support for DRM.
The players that I really like are the network connected DVD players. I can just setup all my files on my file server and have hundreds of movies ready to go at anytime.AIM - DivXVOD

actually, i'm very suprised not to see any statement from Divx/ProjectMayo so far concerning their position w/ the whole acacia squeezeplay going on in our industry, as you guys *must* be an attractive future target for their goon-squad... since your friends/partners at 'homegrown video' have been so public and outspoken w/ their battle on our industry's behalf, it seems a player as large as ProjectMayo could definitely flex some financial/legal muscle as well? it would seem that our mutual business models are just as threatened here.....promise her a defamation, tell her where the rain will fall..Comment

Wrong, there's a firmware upgrade that supports up to DivX 5.5 inclusive. DivX 3.x decoding is taken care of by software while all other DivX versions are decoded by hardware.too bad its only 3.11I couldn't possibly know what I'm talking about, I'm completely, absolutely and definitively out of my fucking mind.Comment
