The problem with the Iraqis hating us is that they don't really. But we promised them freedom and democracy.
    Totally agree!!

Instead they are living under worse conditions than Saddam.. no water, power, censored news, medical supplies and waiting for Bremner to "do something", - but hearing how the country will be "occupied" for an unknown period.

That is not a winning run!

I agree in that it is about the "Big Picture" and is forward thinking and stated as much long before the invasion. WMD's was just the "public/face" rally around the flag theme...and I favored the invasion...but also pointed out that defeating the Iraqi forces would be a cake walk but establishing a reasonably stable Democratic Republic would not be so easy.

Man, the problem with war in general but that region in particular has a tendency to 'snowball' successful military operations, once a power gets going they end up sacking Poitiers in France and besieging Vienna. Obviously nobody wants to see THAT again.

Edit: Oh yeah! I should add this has been happening every 700 yeas or so and guess what, we're due for another 'revolution'

How would the military have stopped 9/11?
Well if they would have been notified sooner...ever heard of jet fighters?

Hate is what fueled those 15 terrorists. And they did subject serious damage upon this country! So don't tell me that hatred is simply an emotion.
Well...yes I will...read this...learn it...know it...hate is an emotion...carrying out an act based upon that emotion is acting out of emotion

And to go on living in YOUR world where "might makes right" and will always save the day is foolish and very short sighted.
"Might makes right" has been very effective since the beginning of man.

But, why should I at this point in my "knowing" you have expected anything insightful from you? You appear to be incapable of that ability. You do at least have "family" of that school of thought in the White House.
That school of thought exists world wide...not just with the White House...but few countries have the might. What fucking world do you live in...have you moved to Webbyland...that fairytale world where there are only "White Hats"?

My uniforms are in storage in the L.A. area along with about 95% my other stuff which I really need to get around to doing something about. I am satisfied that they would not fit me anymore anyhow...to many beers and steaks over the years.

As for having an invite to Webbyland...I am content where I am for the time being. When my mother passes on...I am thinking about relocating to some tropical "paradise".

That wouldn't have stopped the destruction of the planes and any or all civilians hit by the debris after the jets shot the planes down.

Good example of how military weapons cannot stop terrorism! And no amount of military might is going to ever stop a person hell bent on destroying his target even if it means giving up his own life.

But you continue clueless as to why military weapons are not the be all/end all to the threats faced by this country.

You apparently only know the military from a brief stint in the army or whatever branch and apparently have incorporated that into your view upon everything. No wonder you do not grasp world politics. You only grasp military THEORY. And very poorly at that.

I served 12 years in Army's 82nd Airborne Division which in my considered opinion is not what I would call a brief stint. One of my Grandfathers was career military...officer. My real father was career military...officer. My substitute father and mentor (who was a military icon)...was career military...officer. My entire life up to and until '91, when I was injured in the first Gulf War was oriented around the military...my studies were primarily military. I attempt to keep up with current military events. I still know many people, that I periodically stay in touch with, that are still active duty ranging from Generals down to Senior NCO's.

So yes...I guess you could say that I have a poor "grasp of military THEORY"...but of course it would not be true.

Na.. we sorted that one out! Done the hurricane stint for a little excitement and decided it was getting tiresome pulling a network apart and storing it from water damage!

But it is "fun" in a way as long as the novelty lasts... nuthing quite like sitting on the balcony with a beer in the peaceful eye of a hurricane before it blasts the hell outta the place again!

Now we found a "tropical paradise" that has never has never had hurricanes - there is a mountain range that breaks anything like that up if it were to head our way. Only bit that might be noticed is a heavier than usual rainfall.

Na.. not relocating too often! We went on a webmaster "tour" over a good few years of places like Florida, thru Caribbean islands, Venezula blah to see the best locations for living and where offered the most for webmasters.

I don't doubt we found what we were looking for in Costa Rica - got no plans to move again! We just bought about 900 acres of "paradise" and start development early next year on a "webmaster community" project. Can't be bothered moving again, - but it was fun!!

Ah.. the journey started in the UK!

Yes... been to a good few now. All the islands are "different", even tho they may only be 20 mins flying time tween them.

Apart from the possible "hurricane alley" stuff... I think I'd prefer St Maartin. The people are so damned friendly - in fact.. I have never ever come across more friendly folks! Costa Rica is "almost" on par with em!

Other bits are.. their are flights out of their direct to the US, Europe, Canada and other places.. handy!

We were about to buy property there, but found Costa Rica first. There are a few "well known" adult net folks operating out of St Maartin.

Yep.. was just talking about that on another thread! :-)

Tis a thing we have been working on for a few years and the "right" land came up so we bought it. Apart from other stuff, we are developing what is, in effect, a webmaster community with homes, decent comms and related facilities... like photo/video studio etc.

I don't expect much to happen on construction till spring next year.. got a lot to work out tween then! But we have other webmasters and photographers/video people already reserving plots and I'm sure they will all work well to mutual benefit.

Ah.. here's the thread that this came up on earlier...

Trust me this is nothing like Vietnam and never likely to be.

The only comparisons are the US should never had been in either country, especially South Vietnam. There they suported a despot dictator, why? Because the enemy was communist and the media convinced the American people it was a justified war, which was total bullshit. It was idiots like theking who blindly followed what LBJ told them as he spent billions on arms and wasted American lives.

Could the US ever of won in Vietnam, very doubtful. The people of that area would not allow an army of occupation to win. The NVA were better troops, better lead and better fighters that the US troops.

The US goverment finally thew in the towel when feelings at home changed.

Iraq is a different situation, but so long as the US has troops there they will continue to lose US lives and more people will be asking why? The British goverment could not stop the IRA, the Israeli goverment cannot stop the Palestinians and anyone who thinks the US goverment can stop Iraqi freedom fighters from taking American lives is an idiot.

Talking of idiots. The idea from theking that the military can clamp down on the situation is stupid. To achieve this would take measures so draconian the US would be even more hated by Muslims than it is now. It has been shown you cannot guard against a determined terrorist prepared to lose his life.

The only comparisons are the US should never had been in either country, especially South Vietnam. There they suported a despot dictator, why?
Which "dictator" might that have been?

Because the enemy was communist and the media convinced the American people it was a justified war, which was total bullshit.
Ahh...I learn something new every day...the war was the fault of the media. FYI it was President Esienhower that sent the first American troops to Vietnam under the guise of "military advisers"...not the media.

It was idiots like theking who blindly followed what LBJ told them as he spent billions on arms and wasted American lives.
I would personally like to inflict some pain upon your body (I can get your compliance and have you curse the woman that gave birth to you in under five seconds)...which I am quite capable of doing...for calling around 300,000 Americans that were wounded, crippled, and killed in Vietnam...idiots...for answering the call from Uncle Sam and serving their country.

Could the US ever of won in Vietnam, very doubtful. The people of that area would not allow an army of occupation to win. The NVA were better troops, better lead and better fighters that the US troops.

The US goverment finally thew in the towel when feelings at home changed.
So much better that they never won a single battle. The conflict could have been ended in a single day by the use of nukes (which was considered)...in 30 days by sustained 24/7 bombing by conventional bombs (11 days of sustained bombing brought them to the peace table)...in 90 days with a conventional ground offensive into North Vietnam. Instead the war was micro managed by civlians...which prolonged the conflict...which cost lives on all sides...and ultimately cost the support of the American people.

                                                              Iraqi freedom fighters?

The measures used against Germany...Italy...and Japan...some might call "draconian" but were definitely effective.

I do not think there were very many "freedom" fighters in Germany...Italy...or Japan and none of the three peoples seem to hate Americans to any significant degree...and in the case of Japan and Germany they both were occupied and controlled by American forces for approximately five years.

They both now enjoy being the 2nd and 3rd richest countries on the planet.

There was a huge counter-movement throughout the Vietnam period in the US. There was an endless amount of negative coverage about the war throughout. Television news showed picture of children being burned alive from napalm, Time magazine had some pretty horrendous pictures.

Who was it that convinced the Czechs, the Poles, the Hungarians Ukrainians, Armenians, Estonians, Latvians, and the East Germans that the Soviet system was something that needed to go?

Cold War containment was the US foreign policy and that was opposed to the Soviet policy of "spheres of influence". These opposing policies fought for influence and power over the entire globe from 1945 until 1991. Korea, Vietnam, Cuba, Afghanistan. Was it the right policy or the wrong one? Did it contribute to the collapse of the Soviet system? Difficult to say. Afghanistan may have sped it up.

One is to spread democracy throughout the world (or decrease communism or however you want to look at it)

                                                                      Another policy goal contradicts that.

Should that nation prioritize one policy to such a level that nothing no other policy should ever contradict it?

The US is a Republic. Different administrations can set new policies. Those Policies mutate and change over time adapting to both the policy makers personalities themselves and to changes in the world.

Why is this any big deal at all that the US would back, say, Osama against the Russians (containment) and later want him dead or alive? In the 1970s, containment was the number one foreign policy goal and concern of the US, not terrorism.

Apart from other stuff, we are developing what is, in effect, a webmaster community with homes, decent comms and related facilities... like photo/video studio etc.

                                                                        http://www.gofuckyourself.com/showt...threadid=154714
                                                                        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes.. there is plenty space on the land! *g* Folks will live there and either work from home or go to the "center". The idea is to provide backup stuff like spare boxes and facilities and of course the bar and pools!

Got planning for a wide range of homes from small 2 beds to 8 bed villas with pool etc.

We have plans for an eco lodge (and possibly spa - waiting to hear an "expert" opinion on that bit) with restaurant stuff. This is going to be located in the middle of the rainforest near a large waterfall (about 450 ft high) and offer "views".

If folks get tired of the land, there is an *excellent* four star resort complex adjacent to the plot which offers a wide range of facilities - I know the owner of this and we will be doing a deal for "usage" on this. It currently costs us something stupid.. $12 a day to eat and drink all day and use their facilities! *g*

Basically the area is not screwed up with "development" and crap.. the other side of the land has a "feline reserve" of about 3500 hectares, (devoted to jaguars etc) so this ain't going to change.

The idea is you can either walk, drive or take a horse to work and get it to take you home again when you are finished at the bar! *g*

Shit.. I sound like a damned realtor!! Kinda off the thread! But will post something on GFY when we are near completion!

My response would be...that it is not a big deal...from my view point. I live with what I believe is a simple fact. The United States government (just as any other government)...no matter which political party is in power...does what it "percieves" to be in its best interest at any given point in time...in any given circumstance. The world is in a state of flux...so "perceptions" change within this state of flux.

I don't doubt we found what we were looking for in Costa Rica - got no plans to move again! We just bought about 900 acres of "paradise" and start development early next year on a "webmaster community" project. Can't be bothered moving again, - but it was fun!!

Ah.. the journey started in the UK!
Hey that sounds interesting, will you be offering living arrangement with high-speed internet or what exactly will this be?

Edit, never mind I read your replies above =) This sounds really tempting, keep us posted on the progress.

What you will not find is McDonalds, tons of huge 5* american hotels ( like in a non-island destination: Cancun), and tons of Kodak and flag waving tourists.

Food is different, music, dance and yes you can still gamble in most of those locations.

What you will not find is McDonalds, tons of huge 5* american hotels ( like in a non-island destination: Cancun), and tons of Kodak and flag waving tourists.

Food is different, music, dance and yes you can still gamble in most of those locations.

You and Joe Sixpack must have taken the same internet correpondence course on how to get away from America. McDonald's, the omnipresent symbol of American imperialism. ;-)

Puerto Rico has a very interesting blend of cultures. It's a pretty good sized island and you'll find anything from the metropolitan San Juan to (your favorite) small McDonald's-less towns where no one speaks English. In addition to that you can climb mountains, walk through huge caves, or visit the Arecibo telescope. At night, check out some of the local clubs for some amazing latino dance music.
