To answer your question...no, it's not "normal" to have black shits. If it's a true black, tarry color, then that is a sign of "old blood".

Make an appt with your Dr., there is a quick and simple test they can do to determine if there is occult blood in your stool.

Not true black "tarry" stools just very very dark brown (almost black) and doesnt have a foul odour at all.
