Here is what's wrong with AMERICA!

    http://www.cnn.com/2003/US/West/07/1...ash/index.html

This 86 year old man crashes through a cement baracade and then drives 2 1/2 blocks killing 9 people and sending over 40 more to the hospital.

While they were still cleaning the bodies off the ground he was released and sent home.

He said "I mistook the gas for the brake!"

Call me stupid, but if you keep pressing a pedal and the car is going faster and you're killing people would you not try the other pedal?

This is just fucking sick, a 3 year old girl was killed!

When his car stopped there were 2 dead bodies stuck to the hood of his car.

And he has been let go and may in the future get charged. As of right now he's being described on the news as a very nice guy!

Fucking amazing! Look at them videos 2 1/2 blocks with dead bodies on the hood!

It was an accident. The idea of justice is not necessarily to punish. I'm sure this guy will have a hard time coming to terms with this incident for the rest of his short life.

An accident is when you miss a red light and hit someone.

Driving 2 blocks and picking up speed with 2 dead people on your hood is not an accident.

This guy is less guilty than the system that allows an 86 year old man to drive a car.

Yes I'm definitely in favor of controlling the issuing of driver's licenses to these accidents waiting to happen.

This sort of thing happens quite frequently, although this is the most gruesome event of this type yet.

Very sad indeed............ Almost surreal when you see the video. At 86 years old it takes a long time to do anything......Stand up, turn around and even change which foot you are using to control the gas and brake. The police said he was not under the influence of anything........So I imagine they are thinking : What are we gonna do to an 86 year old man? This is a tough one......It was truly an accident. Man imagine having to take that to the grave with you.........seeing those people on your windshield everytime you close your eyes. FUCKIN UNREAL.........
Man I feel sorry for those people who lost someone. Of all the things to worry about.........Getting run down by accident at a farmers market is not one of them.

So Grim....it is a major tragedy....would you have believed it to be more so of an accident if he were flying a plane and took out an apartment complex and died.....would you then be ok with it? In one of the news reports a few saved the man from a crowd who wanted to beat him.....would that have been just?. Accidents happen all day long all over the world... just not as much in Sunny Santa Monica California......

They also just had a report at his house where it shows he has crashed into his own closed garage door twice before when pulling into his driveway.

It's interesting that so many people are willing to let him off the hook because he is older. What if he made this "mistake" because he was younger instead?

What if he was a 16 year old mexican kid instead of an 86 year old man?

The kid would be charged with murder and people would be screaming for his head.

I feel horrible for what happened too, but you would think there would be some consistency in the way people are treated when they make "mistakes".

It's a good thing this unfortunate event didn't unfold in Compton, where he would have plowed through a swap meat or market of some sort with African Americans. I think LA would have had some riots to deal with.

We had a simlar incident when i was working at a bank... this lady pulls up the the curb right next to the ATM, and hits the gas insead of the break, she hops the curb drives through the baracades protecting the ATM and smashes into the wall of our bank.

Luckily no one was standing at the ATM or they would have been dead. All in all no one was hurt, but this shit has got to stop.

Call me agist, but there should be yearly testing after age 50, or something like that.

50? That's too young. Maybe 70. Fifty years old is like middle aged these days.

I am always in South Florida, its amazing the amount of seniors behind the wheels. Whenever we see some crazy shit on the streets nine out of ten its usually an elderly driver.

If he flew a plane into an apartment complex then took off again and flew into another, then took off again and flew into another, then took off again and flew into another for 2 1/2 blocks yeah i'd have a problem with it.

I think the old man and the California DMV are both responsible here.

Okay maybe some people will think I'm insensitive, but fuck it..

Seniors, anybody over 70, should NOT be permitted to drive cars!!! They're too old!! Their vision is bad, their thinking is slow and their judgements are off.

It's not only because of this incident either, I've seen so many INSANE traffic maneuvers performed by old folk that I have no more compassion.

I've seen them drive into businesses & homes killing people. I've seen them run stop lights at a blazing 25mph, I've seen them cut off lanes of traffic and appear to not even notice!

Sure, some people will say 'but they have to renew their licenses every year...once they can't drive safely they won't be approved'....YEAH RIGHT. I don't know about you guys but the driving tests I've taken in 3 different states are cake.....you can hit curbs & run stop signs...you'll still get your license.

One of the article I read said that if you do a comparison based on miles driven, then people over 70 have a far higher accident rate than younger drivers.

They have less actual accidents, but they drive less miles. I don't have the stats, and maybe it's bullshit, but one of the articles said that is the case. I don't know if it's true.

Take the keys away from seniors!!!!!!!!!

He either has know idea what he did, supressed his memory due to a defensive mechanism or he just doesnt give a fuck. He will probably never come to terms with what happened, because there is nothing to say that he should. Shall we let all old people do this without responsibility or deter them from driving by using the court system?

He totally didn't see me, no braking squeels or anything, just slammed into the left side of my car. Luckily it was a parking lot so we were less then 20mph, but still left a killer dent in my car.

Like a test where a kid runs in front of the car, or where a car pulls out and they need to react quickly. With age you lose your brain to body part reaction time which is the most important thing while driving. It's the same as driving drunk, your censory system is jaded.
