Hello,
As some of you may know, Cisco has a major vulnerability across all of their platforms that run IOS, which is just about every single cisco switch/router out there.
You can read the details on this vulnerability here:
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/707...-blocked.shtml
A sum of that for the less technically inclined, unupgraded Cisco equipment would simply stop functioning, requiring a power-cycle if an attacker were to attack it, which therefore made urgent upgrades necessary for those networks using Cisco in the core (most networks).
Over the course of tonight, just about every backbone network has maintenance scheduled (some prominent networks with publicized maintenace include Verio, Level3, Sprint, and Cogent), and many other backbones are working on fixing this, and keeping their maintenance plans quieter.
Our network core is Juniper, and the few Cisco devices in our network were patched for this without incident earlier today.
In the process of this maintenance, one of our upstreams rebooted, and corrupted their configuration in the booting sequence, and originated our announcements, causing a routing problem.
The outage was fairly short, something in the area of 6 minutes.
It's unfortunate, but when every network engineer is awake and rebooting thousands of routers at the same time, an error sometimes occurs.
To those that maintain networks with cisco's, the cisco advisory posted above was just released a few hours ago, make sure you read it and upgrade your network.Last edited by ISPrime Support; 07-17-2003, 12:11 AM.Comment

Dear Client :
Level 3, Sprint, AT&T, and large Internet providers have announced that they will be upgrading code on their routers which will effectively cause intermittent downtime to Internet connectivity. In order to minimize the amount of downtime you experience, every effort is being made to time our maintenance activities to occur within the same timeframe as our upstream providers. Their scheduled maintenance window is from 12:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. MST. At this time, we estimate this downtime to be no more than 7 minutes total. We apologize, in advance, for any inconvenience this may cause.
Best Regards,
CCBill ManagementComment
