Did you see the interview with the G.I.s?

By pure luck I happened to see ABC national news on Tuesday evening. One segment was a reporter interviewing soliders from the 3rd infantry division that had just found out they were NOT going home as planned, but staying longer than they had expected.

I was really struck by the overwhelming hostility for the war that they had! One guy was asked what he would do if Rumsfeld was there right then and he said "tell him to resign!"

Another said at first he liked his mission but now he can't stand the Iraqi people and doesn't want to have anything to do with protecting them.

On the same nite, Chancellor on NBC was in Baghdad interviewing a guy they've been following for the last 9 months. He too was very unhappy.

Completely and totally suprised to see so many grunts so very unhappy with being in Iraq!

Tonite ABC news reported that of all the deaths reported in Iraq since the "end of hositilities" on 5/1/03, 5 of them were SUICIDES!
Why would 5 people who survived the invasion and looking forward to going home kill themselves?? ABC also said this info was "very disturbing" and the Pentagon would not comment and were trying to get it to go away.

Ask amp about the guy who cut his own throat rather than take the pills the US military forced their troops to take during the gulf war

This shouldn't really come as a suprise, if you look at it from their view point. Seriously, they are fighting a war for a peoples that in all honestly hates them, their culture, and wants nothing to do for them. They are risking their lives every time they step outside, live in fear of the suicide bomber or Saddam loyalist that might be hiding among innocent civilians...eh. Its no suprise there's some dissent and unrest among the troops

I'm not suprised they feel that way (guess I didn't word my message properly), but more that they SPOKE OUT with such vehment language and in such numbers.

Of course the General (who's name evades me right now) in charge of the military in Iraq said in a press conference that these guys had no right to voice opinions and are subject to censure or more. Now I wonder if the brass would really do such a thing to them.

There are a few weaknesses in todays military.

              1. They are family men. There was a time when the percentage of married personell in the military was small and for the most part only existed among career military. Now the percentage of those that are married and serving their first, and for many their last, enlistment is very high. Family and military are not compatible and effects the performance of soldiers.

              2. Soldiers of today are allowed to live as part civilian and part soldier more than ever in the past. This became part of the norm for military life in order to keep the "All Volunteer Army" ranks filled. This creates a mind set that effects the performance of a soldier when called upon to be all soldier.

              3. They expect to be rotated since rotation was introduced by the military and has become the norm when extended deployment is required. Rotation is good for morale but is not good for saving the lives of soldiers. It takes time to adjust to whatever situation a soldier is placed in. The soldier becomes experienced and hardened (in essence learns to do the job required of him) and then is rotated out and a green trooper is rotated in. He does not know shit...and this can cost him his life...or the lives of those around him.

Of course...one thing you don't really have when you join the services and that's free will, or free speech.

Sure you are defending the constitution, but you can't do it effectively with people mouthing off about their superiors.

One of the main reasons I never joined.

How do you think you could effectively run a military campaign that would involve people marching towards certain death if you allowed free speech?

Soldiers like places like Thailand where there are lots of go go girls to look at.

I'm still bothered by the suicides. Guilt over what they did?
Feel like there is no way out? I know it's true that until you are in a kill or be killed situation you don't understand how the mind can blow on you quickly.

Can they court marshal you for speaking out like these soldiers do?

You do not have first amendment rights per se. You cannot speak against any superior and that includes the President and the Secretary of Defence among others and yes...if you persisted you would face judcial punishment.

Can someone please tell me why they are injecting the soldiers with these drugs, and what the side effects are? The side effects must be bad if one guy slit his throat. I am assuming that the drugs are for protection against chemical warfare or something similar, but are they untested drugs? And do they cause the soldiers to get sick or something? I read somewhere on the net that soldiers from the first Gulf war all got sick from injections they had to take, is this true?

There are many innoculations that are given...sometimes dependent upon the place that you are being deployed to. There can be side effects to some types of innoculations...and in rare instances even death. It is not that big of a deal and usually someone that refuses to take an innoculation is just using it as a way to get out of the service and/or does not want to be deployed. They will be court martialed and discharged with less than an honorable.

If someone actually committed suicide because he did not want to take a shot...that is not the real reason he committed suicide as they do not physically make you take a shot. You are ordered to do so and if you refuse you will be court matialed and discharged from the service with less than an honorable.

No they did not all get sick...I was in the first Gulf War (Desert Shield and Desert Storm) and I did not get sick. I did get terribly sick of the heat though.
