    hardware MPG encoders

    do they make a difference in the quality of your MPG's compared to a software encoder?

    which one is good? Matrox RT.X100 Xtreme any good?

      Speed is its main difference...
      SIG TOO BIG! Maximum 120x60 button and no more than 3 text lines of DEFAULT SIZE and COLOR. Unless your sig is for a GFY top banner sponsor, then you may use a 624x80 instead of a 120x60.

            As far as I know realtime encoding can never be as efficient (size and quality wise) as 'off-air', since it cannot analyse a window of any more than a few seconds.

            With a good software encoder like tmpgenc, you can use variable bit rate - which bursts to a higher rate when there is motion or detail, and drops to lower rates when there is little movement or change. VBR encoders usually do two or more passes over the source to figure out the best compression to use each frame. You can't do this in real time...
