    Check out the broadband they've got in Japan!

    Softbank has spent close to $2 billion building out a gigabit Ethernet network and leasing copper wire from Japanese telecom giant Nippon Telegraph and Telephone. The result is a service, offered under the Yahoo! BB brand, that provides Internet access to Japanese homes at 12 megabits per second - eight times faster than what Americans are used to - for about $21 a month. Every day, as many as 7,000 new subscribers fire up their plug-and-play DSL modems, making Yahoo! BB the world's fastest-growing broadband service.

              Thats fucking sick - I pay $70 a month for 756k up and down - now if Japan was no so over priced I may move - think of how many TGPs you can run on 12 megabit pipe

                  I'm in Japan right now. Everybody seems to have DSL now and in my hotel I have free LAN access in the room and free wireless LAN access in the lobby... last year I had to use a 56K modem when I was here...

                      I've had 1.5mb cable in the US for $40 usd/month, 1.5mb DSL and Cable in Canada for about $30 usd/month, and 1.5mb DSL in Australia for about $50 usd/month

                                                                                                      You can't go by those stats since they are based on population size. All of those countries can fit in the US so the stats are somewhat skewed.

                                                                                                          The CIA site (obviously not unbiased, but with a lot of data) has the U.S. above Japan, but they show 2001 numbers for the U.S. and 2002 numbers for Japan.

                                                                                                          Somehow several sites show conflicting numbers on the same list for similar time periods. Maybe it has to do with how you calculate it.

                                                                                                                                          If you see the wholesale prices for broad band in the UK it is disgusting the mark up that is being made. A few months ago Oftel ruled that BT had to open up the broadband on a realistic wholesale price. Did anyone drop there prices? nope just brought in cheaper from BT and kept them high and stuffer the surfer.
