my friend is starting a house siding business and he was asking me for places to advertise. my best idea was make up flyers and pay some young kids to pass them out going house to house. the newspaper wanted like $4,000 for a 1/4 page ad. does anyone else have any better ideas?

flyers are good, consider some smaller print media that doesn't cost as much as that 4k joint...I'm sure you can find some other local newsrags or mags that have better rates...
also, consider the biz she's in and what related or appropriate places/publications/biz would be to get listed at....Investor with 5m - 15m USD to invest. Do you have a site or network of sites earning 50k - 200k a month income? I have a good friend that is a manager for Target Direct Mailing in Arkansas.
They mail all over the world, they have business lists, residential lists, and will mail wherever you want, and the price is reasonable.
Classifieds are good, business cards of course, however, I think if he were to mail people in his area he would get some good responses from it.

Being a webmaster yourself, I should not even have to tell you this but he needs a website. Then he needs to market the heck out of that website with link exchanges with area builders and suppliers and whomever else will exchange links with him in that area, not to mention the search engines. Maybe buy some banner space on some of the local websites (radio station and city guides). Also he needs to put that website URL on his banner Deeprub suggested so people can check out what he has to offer when they get home.
