    I think you should say:

You obviously have not been to Monaco, and if ever you do, you will stay on the " promenade " and at the Casino....

yeah. contrary to what people think... that banks invest the money, loan money to business and pump it into the community, creating jobs and economic development... the opposite is actually true. money just stays in banks. they hide it. usually they burn it. all money goes to Monaco so they can burn it in massive underground incinerators.

i was going to move to Monaco this fall because i liked it there so much. i have been there quite a few times. the best feature of Monaco is....

        no people like you.

So what percentage do you claim that Monaco's bank have reinvested in the LOCAl economy?

Does your belief also applies to Switzerland, Lichenstein, Bahamas, Belize and other fiscal paradise???

no. money gets pumped into those countries for no reason at all. the countries create laws, tax laws and banking regulations that are of absolutely no benefit to them whatsoever.

Yeah, but that's not what we are talking about. The standard of living of Monaco nationals. Not the super rich looking for a place to stash their dolla to avoid taxes.

Fuck, not that I know jack shit about Monaco, just going on SOL statistics.

This is probably true. However, how much of the "saved taxes" are due to charitable donations and other tax write-offs?

                        Hi Lenny,

I agree that there are irregularities in accounting both over the years in the US and between countries themselves. Is the 100%+ of GDP debt of Italy's different in kind than the 60%-ish figure in the US?

What does a debt that is 60% of GDP mean? Is it important that it is 60% rather than 50% or 70%? Howabout 40% vs. 80%?
Is that too high or just right? How can we know? Comparison to other industrial countries and to the past does give a guide but no answers.

What I see is that the US debt is similar to that of other large/medium-sized industrial countries relative to the size of the economy in question. What I see is that same ratio is pretty much the same today as it was ten years ago for the US.

Every EXTRA $100 billion in debt is about a 1% increase in the debt/gdp ratio. One must also consider that every $100billion spent is an increase in the GDP of 1%. If the US is going to be in a -2% GDP recession should it spend an extra $200 billion to reach the break-even point?

Back in 1988 the US economy was less than half the size it is now, about $5 trillion instead of $10 trillion. It would have only cost $50 billion to erase a 1% GDP decline. Any country that uses deficit spending to limit the effects of economic slowdowns will find itself with larger and larger annual deficits during those years of recessions.

                        Quick examples:

                        A. The US finds itself on pace for a -2% GDP recession. It spends that 2% to bring it to break-even (Government spending positively effects GDP). This increases the deficit by 2% of $10 trillion which is $200 billion.

                        B. France, the world's 5th largest economy finds itself on pace for a -2% recession. It spends that money to break even which costs
2% of $1.3 trillion which is only $26 billion.

A country with an economy 8 x larger than another has to deficit spend 8x as much money to increase the same GDP percentage.

When the US economy is $20 trillion/year, it will run deficits of $800 billion in slow years.

Everyone should make the same contribution regardless of income. I'm not just talking about a flat tax. I say we go all the way.

Everyone send the government a $10,000 check and we'll just call that the fairest system possible.

                                    I don't know man.

I know a lot of people who run businesses. At the end of the year, every damn one of them finds something to spend money on to drop their taxes. Whether it be capital for the company, more land for another warehouse, company vehicles, donations to their local parks, it's always something.

Nobody likes paying taxes when there's a way to get something extra out of the same money. Be it material or spiritual.

I really don't know, I can't imagine its much though.

I think other countries have similar provisions for charitable donations and such. Maybe someone from the UK can tell us?
Yeah, Europe has this. UK, France, Germany def. I'd be surprized is the other Euro countries didn't. The've all been around long enough to develop really fucked up taxation systems

Everyone send the government a $10,000 check and we'll just call that the fairest system possible.
Colin, at this point I'd settle for a flat tax.
We'll never see it because once the poor realized how much all these dopey programs they vote for actually cost, they would vote them all down.
(of course, it wouldn't get that far. once the poor realized a flat tax means "paying your share" they'll run from it like its the plague)

Interesting to see which years were actually in the green. Maybe Bill Clinton wasn't the most moral man, but he didn't do much that was really BAD as far as the country was concerned.

Basically the combined rate for top bracket Canadians is much higher. 46% or so in ontario, 48% in Quebec, less in places like alberta where it comes out to 39% I think, all that oil and gas money is handy. But that 29% isn't even close to what you'd pay in effect.

But still way better than that Netherlands one, 72% WTF? I guess if you get rich there you move.

What's better, 72% on earnings above 1 million a year only, or 29% on earnings above 25,000 a year only. I'll take the 72% thank you. Without the 'level', that figure is meaningless.
