Wow Muff! I used to think the same way but Unions don't work quite that way. lol How could I possibly know that?! I work for a realtime Union. Been trained in DC (made) and have more ongoing training to go to.
It would be entirely possible to Unionize and treat each webmaster as a seperate company that does things their own way. Contrary to popular belief Unions do NOT tell companies what they can or cannot do. They sit down and decide the human services and rights of employees TOGETHER and then set a period of time that the agreement will stand for.
And then if the company decides to break that agreement the Union steps in to toe them back in to line with the agreement. In other words make 'em behave. You can't get fired for getting hurt, you get raises on a set basis etc etc etc.
Without having thought about it but for a minute, I guess I wonder what benefits this would do since their is no real 'company' to sit down with. It wouldn't get anyone insurance paid, couldn't get raises, and the bottom line is who gets paid the dues.
I guess it could play hob with TGP owners that want to charge and the like. As in the Union boycotts so and so. But I dunno if it'd be worth the dues. lol
Speaking of which I have to get outta here and read some paperwork on some pilots in our Union that wanna stay grounded until they get their just dues.
