Its so backwards its only illegal on certain days of the week.

      How lame is that?

Dry 'areas' (counties) reflect the will of the people in THAT area to not want the sales of alcohol. It does NOT say you canNOT have alcohol in your home and drink it. Sure the laws might be stiffer for drunk driving or other crimes in that county or city-township but thats what the voters wanted. Their right eh?

I was young once and was against the laws on pot. Heck my best friend fled the state because of a possession charge. lol But it still comes down to this is a Federal level law. The states that lowered the chrages for it lost alot of Fed $$ and raised EVERYones taxes to make up for that loss? Is that right for the 70 yr old next door to pay for YOUR foolish habits? No.

Should they have to pay for the taxes from tobacco? No. but they are the generation that went with it back then so they are stuck. Allowing the law to be 'legal' for say an ounce only increases the odds that the next change will be *2* ounces... and so on.

Question being, is the Canadian Govt prepared to regulate the sale of this or are they going to allow the illegal sale to continue? If they are not going to regulate it as tobacco is, then WHOM is going to benefit from those millions of dollars? Criminals?? (assuming that they will keep the laws governing the sales of pot as a crime) I can't see many Canadians trying to grow it for themselves, or was that part of the law, that its no longer a crime to grow it as well?

Bottom line is, not many are thinking past the end of their bongs as to what this 'legalization' might entail. You can't make one law change without it reflecting on others.

Someone mentioned the borders I believe... Hmmm, we do have the right to close and seriously review anyone coming IN at any time I believe.

And no, I don't agree with how any of these things are being dealt with from EITHER side of the border. I do have to chuckle when I see the same petty little pothead arguments that I heard back before the majority of your parents were old enough to concieve tho.

You know anyone that lives in Dry Counties? I do. I have been through many of them, and most complain about it. They complain about century old fucks telling them what to do now. They recently have started to lower the number of votes needed to make a 'dry' county 'wet.' in texas for one. Look it up. ' House Bill 892. Signed by the Governor June 15; effective Sept. 1, 2001.'

The will of the people during late 1800 and early 1900s created the Dry Areas of texas, has nothing to do with the people that inhabit it now.

It's No different than Reefer madness, a bunch of people claming one thing is bad therefore no one can have it. They felt alcohol 'morally' wrong, so they banned it. Pull up quotes about 'the ******s and the spicks who bring marijuana into our cities.' and tell me how those laws should stand now. They wrote some bad laws and enforced some silly things over the centuries, usually fueled by their christian guilt.

The 'Dry's were fighting to keep alcohol illegal Half a century ago, times have changed.

"""How much alcohol can you bring into a dry area?

Possession of more than a quart of liquor in a dry area or more than the equivalent of 24 12-oz containers of beer is prima facia evidence of possession with intent to sale. If found in possession of a greater quantity of alcoholic beverages, you could be charged and the burden of proof would switch to you to prove that the beverages were for another purpose."""
Could that 'other purpose' be a party Officer Redneck? I usually buy more than 24 beers when I stock up. And I keep flavors of my favorite beer brands stocked.

32 beers means I sell beer?

            hahah

Quoting century old laws and reasons why alcohol is in Dry areas is silly. Some idiots in 1915, they most likely hated blacks too.

We could own slaves, but couldnt drink. Times have changed, time to change the laws.

              Here's a prime example.

Most don't even know but jack Daniels is made in a Dry COunty.

And for a very long time, it could NOT be sold even where it was made. 1909 - 1994

There reason for letting up? None other than good old fashioned CASH.

'How can Jack Daniel's make and sell whiskey in a "dry" county?

Moore County, where Jack Daniel Distillery is located, went "dry" in 1909, just before national Prohibition. Because of a special Tennessee State law that was passed after Prohibition, we've been allowed to make our whiskey in Moore County. Up until January 1995, it could not be sold here. But thanks to a 1994 special act of the Tennessee Legislature, we began selling commemorative decanters containing Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey on January 2, 1995. The distillery makes a $3.50 donation to Moore County for every bottle sold. The commemorative decanters filled with Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey are available only on the premises of the distillery. Other bottles of Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey, as well as any other spirit, cannot be legally purchased or sold anywhere else in Moore County. '

              http://www.jackdaniels.co.uk/oldno7/facts.asp

Special rules for special folks, and ONLY if the government can get some.

Sorry Fletch... I was running on our own state pertaining to the dry laws. Alot of them get revisited on votes every year and many are upheld. Same as the limits on possession numbers. ;-)

What laws there are in other states on this, I could care less. Its up to the people that you say are complaining SOOO much to raise the signatures to get it put to a vote. If they can't raise them, Oh *pout*. Sounds like the majority spoke maybe.

Yep lived in the areas a couple of times myself, but seeing as they weren't 'on campus' or one of the other so called hot areas of the city, I could care less if Joes Bar & Grill didn't sit on the corner.

The hubby traveled ALOT and was sent to areas where HUD built apartments for low income rural area families. Guess what, they at times drove 200 miles 1 way to get beer. What else do construction workers do at night in a motel in a town of 300 at night, 50 miles from no where but drink beer and watch TV. lol

You don't spend alot of time in a local hangout or the good ol boys get to thinking 1) you want the girls or 2) they start hearing dueling banjos in their heads. lmao

I was speaking on pure laws that have or have not been revised in the modern world, not the early 1900's. My personal family was pretty fresh off the ship about then, and his wasn't allowed to have dat nasty ol White Eyes firewater then. lol

But it IS up the the people that WANT the dry areas to go away, to get it on the ballot. It still is majority rule until Dubya makes that sino-terrorist to gather signatures.

Personally I'll agree with Ralph Nader -- the war on drugs is the real problem in the USA.

I've seen a cocain plant before -- it grows like any other plant in your garden -- it's not a big deal. No need to get upset about the consequences of "legalization".

Okay, so you speak of your state, I was speaking of general 'Dry COunty' guidelines. The numbers can change, but that doesn't change the rules.

So you don't care what other laws are. Fine. I do, I try to keep up and find out what is going on around this country in regards to things. I am from a long line of bar and pub owners, and laws like this interest me, especially when it comes to local areas or even more places i do NOT live, curiosity.

I have been in Atlanta and almost got into plenty of shit buying too much alcohol after a concert one night and going back to the hotel on a Saturday, and Sunday being Dry. Im not talking about just 'where you live' I am talking about people like me who travel THROUGH a dry area, THIS IS WHY people should know about laws. You can get your ass in trouble. So shrug off the laws elsewhere, but I try to pay attention to what is an what is not allowed during the course of this ongoing battle between the Drys and the Wets and the Pot heads and the people like you who 'could care less' ;)

Yep lived in the areas a couple of times myself, but seeing as they weren't 'on campus' or one of the other so called hot areas of the city, I could care less if Joes Bar & Grill didn't sit on the corner.
As I said, just because you don't give a shit, doesn't mean the guidelines or Dry Areas and the laws within do not apply. So you dont go out to Joe's bar and grill, stay home, but that doesnt necessarily make it wrong for me to want to go out, does it?

The hubby traveled ALOT and was sent to areas where HUD built apartments for low income rural area families. Guess what, they at times drove 200 miles 1 way to get beer. I'd consider that a drinking problem ;)

You don't spend alot of time in a local hangout or the good ol boys get to thinking 1) you want the girls or 2) they start hearing dueling banjos in their heads. lmao
No clue what this means, I spend a lot of time drinkiing and partying with friends, I never hear banjos.

I was speaking on pure laws that have or have not been revised in the modern world, not the early 1900's. My personal family was pretty fresh off the ship about then, and his wasn't allowed to have dat nasty ol White Eyes firewater then. lol
Ah see, my family has been in this country since the 1700's, helped fight wars to establish this country, and even owned and operated many bars in new Orleans over the last 40-50 years which would be the front of the 'alcohol' war since, New Orleans was the last state to enforce the no drinking until 21, and until I was 21 I hung out and drank legally in bars from 18-20. 3 Months before I was 21, they enforced the law, meaning I had trouble getting into bars for 3 months, where I had been in the same bar since I was 18, even before ;)

This is why alcohol related laws interest me, and I do care about what goes on in regards to it, ESPECIALLY in places I do not inhabit.

Knowledge is the only way to win this war.

And we will, even if we have to wait until all you old fucks die.

weed, tobacco, alcohol... it grows in the earth...

And the ingredients for chemical, biological and nuclear weapons are naturally occuring as well.

No I don't fear weed or anything else for that matter. It's obvious you are in hyperdrive reading mode again. Wonder what could cause you to be that way so often? Heck I'm not even a "bro". lol I do have a brother, stack yourself up 3 times, thats about his size so I know its not you.

Sounds like you have a real interest in it Fletch which is great. Personally I look at how many counties that are in this country (and not haing the same interest) just could care less if someone in the backwaters of Idaho don't know HOW to proceed to change the dry laws in their own area. I can't educate them all and wouldn't want to try. lol

My brother owned a bar for many years and he dealt with the same problems that your family has. It got to that point that they had to count how MANY drinks each patron had and cut them off. He didn't complain about it, Part of doing the business he said. He'd still be running it but for a divorce (Least I think thats what caused it, we don't talk often, he's one of those quiet guys)

On the Joes part? I didn't go to those sort of places. I was a dancer and that means music and a floor with ALOT of people. Not the neighborhood family crowd. Although I did have a fav place WAY out in the sticks that did C&W with a floor and surprisingly a large crowd even on the week nights.

Banjos? lol I was referring to when the hubby traveled with his crew (sans carrying his friends along) and they were stuck in some hick town... There wasn't squat to do so they stayed at the (dry)motel and drove to get their beer alot of the time. You do NOT go into the backwaters of West By Gawd and stop by the pool hall for long before the local guys start hearing the banjos or one gets drunk from his paper bag and thinks a outsider os looking at his girl. They were there to work, not fight. They also never had any problems with the local cops even when they were seen carrying multiple cases of beer into a room. They packed along their own mini fridge even. lol

Heck I like to have as good a time as any one else, and probably could (according to you, my advanced age,) give you a serious run for your money at any bar. lol A clue tho, don't try to match someone that made their living at conning guys into buying them drinks for 8 hrs a night and still do when I'm in the mood to fleece younkers from their paychecks. lol

I *did* stop the pot and all of that years (oops centuries) ago. Just got tired of it and decided I didn't like to hack up a kidney or pee blood from something I swallowed. One thing... (I( took the things you all only hold in a place of homor, REAL Black Beauties, REAL Yellow Jackets, sopors, you name it. lol I think it might have sunk in when my best friend ran and left her family and what little she had. Was it worth it? Not to me.

Oh and the hubby said to add that his family fought to, first to throw your asses out of here and then to help keep your family HERE. (Well they did kill alot of Americans in the French Indian wars) but... They fought in every war FOR America right up to Afghanistan. We're not sure if anyone is Iraq or not. Where are YOU?? Don't let that bong bite ya. lol

The thing is, there's a reason why it isn't. They tried criminalizing it, and it didn't work. Once people are used to something being legal to the point of being a major part of society, it's hard to make it illegal.

So, think of it this way... Both pot and alcohol probably should be illegal. However, it just isn't reasonable to make alcohol illegal. The transition would be a mess. Pot is illegal now, though, so why not leave it that way.

There's another reason not to make pot legal, though, and it is related. Once something is illegal, people get a certain mindset about it. If pot is legalized, there would be years of mess as the problems of illegal pot were phased out, and increased use set in. Eventually, the benefits of it being legal might outweight the problems, but what about the decade or so of mess?

This is NOT about legalization...only decriminalization. If you get caught with under 1/2oz (I think?), you will pay a fine....not go to jail.

Here, you can get busted with an ounce and be okay.

'Possession of marijuana is a misdemeanor under California Health and Safety Code Section 11357. Possession of one ounce (28.5 gms) or less is punishable by a maximum $100 fine. Jail time is possible for larger amounts or for hashish, which is an optional felony ("wobbler"). However, under Prop 36, effective July 1, 2001, first- and second- time possession-only offenders may demand a treatment program instead of jail. Upon successful completion of the program, their conviction is erased. Possession (and personal use cultivation) offenders can also avoid conviction by making a preguilty plea under Penal Code 1000, in which case their charges are dismissed upon successful completion of a diversion program. Possession offenses are expunged from the record after two years under Health and Safety Code Sections 11361.5 and 11361.7.

Possession of one ounce or less in a vehicle while driving may also be charged under Vehicle Code 23222, which is treated identically to HSC 11357 B.

No arrest or imprisonment is allowed for possession of less than one ounce of marijuana.

I doubt the naturally occurring plant argument would hold up in any country.

Datura grows wild in the southern states and is actually classified as a weed/pest plant. Up here you can get it for 10$ at a nursery for your garden.
                                                  http://www.erowid.org/experiences/exp.php?ID=712

Basically, anything will grow like wildfire up in coastal BC, since it's so bloody wet and warm. My house used to have pot growing in the backyard among the irises, thanks to the previous owners' hobby.

Just because it's 'naturally occuring' doesn't mean the locals can handle the responsibilty of easy access.

But yeah, if you're going to decriminalize possession and use, you MUST regulate production and distribution channels, or you get a HUGE black market and really bad product and lots of crime resulting from an increased demand and increased risk of trafficiking (the penalties were doubled). It's all or nothing, baby.

Alcohol is bad stuff for some people and in large amounts. So is anything. So is sugar. If a country is going to allow drug use, it needs to have a social health system to support the drug users, which is expensive and very socialist. So, the USA being a very capitalist country, it makes sense that they wouldn't want to allow drug use, because the medicare system simply can't handle the effects of legalization. It's chosen to pump th emoney into defense and business, instead. It's a matter of prioritizing at the most basic level.

Blah. Time for lunch. Now if only I could get those terrorists to do my dishes for me....

So a plant should be illegal because of schoolbus drivers? That's not a good argument. That's like saying everyone should get 8 hours of sleep because a brain surgeon might fall asleep during surgery.

Maybe we should link chocolate to terrorism... or ice cream -- if women weren't so fat, maybe we wouldn't have so much terror in the world...

Which most here need to know the difference between decriminalizing something, and legalizing something, very different things.

California is very weird. There's places you can grow legally up north, and this state is always pushing on the medical marijuana thing, but it just doesn't seem to be enough.

                                                                      I like it here though.

Pot is classified as the same so why not speak of them the same. But there is a difference and any intelligent person could recognize this. Ive seen plenty of stoners in my time, and Ive also seen alot of heroin addicts, and coke heads, I know in my heart which is worst since Ive lost friends to hard drugs, 4 since I left for college. Never lost a friend to pot. ;)

Have friends that grow legally in Humboldt. It's a silly reasoning, hopefully one day it will all work out. Until then, I'll smoke and drink what I like and when I like. And one of the biggest concerns with legalizing some of these recreational drugs is not those that have the ability to use them responsibly.... it is the masses of complete morons with no self-control that will use them irresponsibly..... the ones that will use and then go driving, the extra fools that, once it's legalized will O.D. on them and clog our hospitals, etc etc.

I think they can (and will) integrate pot into a similar category as alcohol eventually though.
