That sounds like a good idea...
I personally use EditPlus.com text editor -- save direct to the server (ftp browser is inside the program) -- and there's a browser inside the editor -- cool little program and it's shareware.

wysiwyg programs were created to improve upon our lives, to improve upon our efficiency, saving time, and money among other things.
I have a working knowledge of html and use dreamweaver, but to brag that you only code using notepad impresses me about as much as the size you claim your penis is.
I agree.
I can code HTML in notepad if I have to, no problem - but why bother when you have wysiwyg editors.
I write all html, php, coldfusion, java-script, dhtml myself... by hand...
why not use a wysiwyg editor? Hmm... mostly because you can't truly get it to do absolutely everything that you want it to.. or not how you'd like it to.
But also, because they can be a pain in the ass when it comes to adding a ton of extra code. For example... to make a font blue and size +2... an editor will usually make that 2 separate < font > tags... that's just stupid.
Can you show us an example of why it's better? I don't know why XML is useful...
You can't really compary XML with HTML, so sorry that I did. XML is merely a usefull complement to HTML.
I find XHTML very much better than regular HTML though. The use of stylesheets is so important. It keeps your documents tidy and small, thus also improving the load times and decreasing bandwith costs.

Oh yeah...I can't use anything else. It's just easier and makes more sense to me, personally, to use a text editor than to learn DW or GoLive or whatever, when those proggies add code I don't want and don't do what I want them to do, anyway. NoteTab rocks my world...

I started on sgml then moved on to html when it come about. I can't say I am up on all the new html tricks, but I can do what I need to. HTML is baby food. Don't rely on the WYSIWYG editors completely, Buy a book, learn it, and then use the editors to enhance.
I use WYSIWYG editors to get a general layout established, but 90% of the time they have bad code bloat, so I end up doing most of it by hand. I use EditPadPro to do my editing.
But the first time I use a WYSIWYG that doesn't have bad code bloat... I'm down, it's faster... and ultimately its like being an architect, its good to know how to do layouts on paper so you know whats going on... but for fucks sake save yourself some time and just use CAD
Not knowing at least the basics of HTML is like trying to sell cars and not knowing fuck all about how the engine works.. I fucking HATE WYSIWYG editors, I mean FUCKING HATE them. I will never use a designer again if I see that they are using dreamweaver or whatever the fuck they are using(but especially not dreamweaver). It is a complete joke to see someone designing a webpage and them not having a fucking clue on how to code it.. IT just pisses me off, why would you hire someone that knew nothing about the inner workings of his work? Would you want a computer technician that didn't know the first thing about computers once Pretty little windows shut down? fuck that I say.. And even non-designers should know how to code in HTML. It is the fucking GUTS of our industry for fucks sakes, this is what makes it run, at least know a little so you can fix it if it goes wrong.
When someone comes to me and says 'I want to get into porn, what do you recommend' I say 'Learn HTML inside and out and come back to me in 2 months, touch dreamweaver and you are on your own'
My GF had hardly touched a computer 2 years ago, first thing she did after really learning how windows worked was learned how to code in HTML, and now she is pretty fucking good, AND the thing that really turns me on is that now that she can do anything in code that dreamweaver can do, she hates WYSIWYG editors just as much as I do.. She knows that if someone looks at her code and sees the absolute fucking garbage that those programs produce(ie: 830 Div Align=left tags for a 80 lines of code) then that will reflect poorly on her as a designer..
It is just about pride I suppose.. Do you want your products to look good on the inside and the outside, and to be as small and efficient as possible? Or do you just care about a pretty paintjob with a peice of shit engine under the hood?

oh yea, we both use CuteHTML for all my HTML needs. Been using it for 5 years now and I will live and die by it..
Simple and probably the most effective text editor out there.

I use dreamweaver mx and still code everything by hand. The only reason i use dreamweaver MX is so that i can see the coding while i am working on it. I don't use all the other fancy shit this thing has.
Yeah...MX has its uses. I use it to frustrate the hell out of me when I do anything more complex than straight html. PHP, it's useless, I just am lazy, let Photoshop build the HTML then fix it with vi to be usable in PHP. MX tends to blow up if you get creative with PHP. vi all the way. Of course I started nine years ago programming CMS directly, so it's much faster for me to trick things using vi or notepad than to beat MX into submission. Forms in MX are a disaster, if you try doing your join page in it it gets fucked to hell and back, MX tends to rename form fields even when you tell it not to. Since I started using PHP it's just a base to save me from lots of typing. Also extraordinarily weak in real JS, even advanced CSS. Must be a gay thing...I always end up going manual
