You read a report that means little to anyone other than yourself and in addition the US has little foriegn debt. The Congress is the one that approves and passes budgets not the President. The members of both houses of Congress chose to ignore the report that you seem to have so much confidence in...I wonder why?Originally posted by Webby
Hate to say it, but here's some news - you own nothing!
In fact the US is in debt to the rest of the world to the tune of 94% of all US home contents (or, $44,200billion) - sadly your only share of that music system is 8%.
As your "President" what he did with the US Treasury Report and recommendations.

I find it odd that anyone would be commenting on any debt the USA might owe to the rest of the world, when anyone that knows anything about, oh, say, they lend-lease military aid program during WWII would tell you that there are several countries "across the pond" that will be forever in debt up beyond their eyeballs to the USA for what was done for them during and since that time of world crisis. Fact is, the US has sent aid in many forms to many many dozens of countries over the past few hundred years, most of them in the past 100 years. Trillions of dollars in aid, food, medicine, rebuilding, training, military relief, protection, and gifts of military hardware so certain beleagered nations could defend themselves.... including Great Britain during WWII.In fact the US is in debt to the rest of the world to the tune of 94% of all US home contents (or, $44,200billion)
Trillians have been given..... not billions. Trillions. For anyone to point out some unsubstantiated figure like 44 trillion OWED is.... ludicrous.Promote Wildmatch, ImLive, Sexier.com, and more!!

Not the government.
Not the politicians or political parties.
Not the foreign or domestic policy.
Not the conservatives or liberals.
Not big business or the military complex.
These are just fine and dandy apparently.
Further proof you don't have a clue when you get things so bass ackwards!
If you want to go after Bush, or a particular foreign policy, or other right wing apparatus, then you just might get more support in your arguments.
But to classify the entire American population as shit is as ludicrous as saying the French have absolutely no worthwhile culture at all!

Nothing wrong with reading about a country but to me countries are sights, smells and sounds. How do you get those out of a book? You don't.
You have quite an ego Colin, especially for a man who obviously hasn't done much significant travel.

DUH??? That is why some people "wonder" about people in the US... but, they are everywhere I suppose!
Fact... US does actually apply money to worthwhile efforts in the same way many other countries do.
Fact... US also uses money to buy people to achieve their own ends. In a "non US" world, that is bribery.
Finally, the US "tried" to give money to the country I currently live in. This was in return for not supporting the International Criminal Court and excluding US citizens from being subjected to the the court's judgements. This was refused since it was considered that any citizen of any country who committed genecide and crimes against humanity should be subject to prosecution by the ICC.
You neglected to add the harsh 12 year sentence that would be meted out, just like the last case they heard. The ICC is a fucking joke. 12 years for genocide. Give me a break!!
I think I'd rather be tried in the Hague if I was on trial, then be tried in a US Federal Court. Shit, Johnny Walker Lind got 20 years for "helping and aiding" an enemy......Comment

I was watching the news and it said " but this time would be different because three sources are asking ..."
I have not read up on this Liberia thing that keeps popping up.
But I am going to.
Anyways I wanted to say - if it is necessary to go - I hope Canada replaces some of the troops in Iraq - with Canadian peace keepers.
Being "not in the war" - this might work very well. It would be safer for our US friends too.
If the US gave Canada one of the cities for police protection this could free up US resources as well.
It seems like a second "replace the leader" campaign has begun?
Am I understanding this correctly?
But.... there's no oil?????

Your continual attempts to challenge anyone that disagrees with you to a test of "how many countries have you visited?" is nothing more than an attempt to define knowledge by a standard you know you score high on. Sort of like tall people trying to create an IQ test based on height. ;-) It's a very predictable response. I've seen it from you at least a dozen times. Problem is it's worthless as an evaluation. There are many people who have travelled and seen much of the world and yet understand so little of it.
"Sights, smells, and sounds" give one such a limited view of the world. What does one learn from seeing Gaudi's Sagrada Familia,
the Eiffel tower, or smelling the Riviera? While I admit those are rather pleasant aesthetic experiences and they do have value, experiencing the hardness of French Bread or smoking a joint in Amsterdam give one little perspective that is useful in a discussion on world politics.

This is all particularly ironic considering you are American. Americans are the world's worst travellers. To most Americans the value of travel is in the shopping! The only people I've ever seen trying to "do Europe in 2 weeks" have been Americans. Americans bitch more about other cultures because it's different to what they have at home. Everything else is inferior because its different. Travel, to most Americans, is like visiting a strange theme park filled with odd people and strange food.Originally posted by Colin

I revel in diversity. I like meeting people and talking to them, particulalrly locals but other travellers as well. I don't stay at hotels, I stay at youth hostels. I don't eat at fancy restaurants I eat where locals eat or buy food from supermarkets (which is a rich cultural experience in itself). I don't go to McDonalds where most American tourists go, I like to try the local fare and get a feel for a country's cuisine. I travel at ground level. I don't DO organised tours, I travel independently.
I'm sorry but books could NEVER in a million years give me what travel has given me. Ever. It's simply not possible. The same way that reading a book on carpentry doesn't make you a good carpenter... you need to actually DO IT. Books are great for background, history and context, but that's all. Ultimately they are just words on a page.Comment

You got me there. I do stay in the best hotels when I travel. It's beneath me to stay in a "youth hostel" and I would never use the word "fancy" unless I am describing ketchup. The only one between the two of us that complains about other cultures though is you, Joe. In fact, your judgement of Americans as "the world's worst travellers" is nothing other than a judgement based upon an arbitrary standard, the result of cultural differences. Did you learn the French word for hypocrite in your travels?Originally posted by Joe Sixpack

I've had a great time every place I've visited. I even liked the driving in Puerto Rico. I certainly have no complaints about someone else's culture like your continual complaints about mine.
"Americans are the worst this, Americans are the worst that". It's quite evident that you have an unhealthy obsession with Americans and America that is based upon personal bias and overgeneralization. What happened to you as a kid? Some American kick your ass or something? You sound like one of those scared little kids from high school that has some serious issues you still need to grow out of.
The things you are describing are a great way to experience the world but close to valueless in providing one information upon which to judge the world. All you've done is describe a great program for "looking at stuff" and tasting some local cuisine. What you are describing is entertainment.
In thread after thread you have asked people "how many countries have you visited" as if visiting countries is going to cure whatever is wrong with you. ;-)

I don't see travel as a waste of time, Joe. I love travelling and always have a good time when I do travel. Hell, I have nearly 4 billion square miles of US just to see to start with. Travel is entertainment. Like you, I usually eat at local restaurants, try and speak the local language, and wouldn't be caught dead in a McDonald's. Well, except at the Cannes Film Festival one day I thought I ordered duck and got pate. I ran, did not walk, did not pass Go, to the nearest McDonald's and had a burger and fries. Thre are exceptions to every rule. There are 4 and 5 star local hotels and restaurants everywhere you know.
One of my biggest disappointments in travelling has been that so many people speak English and that there is a McDonald's everywhere. So much worldwide fluency in English is a crutch one can always fall back on when asking for something.
Your claim is that travel is giving you some great insight into the world but I think it is giving you a very limited view which is inferior to study.
