Pixar used to be a software company, too. They sold RenderMan for the Mac, and probably for NeXT and PC too... They have their own in-house software, probably in combination with other packages. I'd actually be curious to see exactly what they use, though I imagine like their render farm it changes all the time.

I'm sure it is. If Jobs was smart he'd stop holding back and unleash the big guns no matter how much it costs. With the type of business people that really use the functionality of a Mac they could sell a large amount of $5-10k Mac supercomputers! They would also get the respect of devout PC users then because even PC makers don't really release all the firepower available in PC Land.
Kinda like the way Mercedes will release a $1mil supercar only to increase sales and prestige on the $90k cars.I've trusted my sites to them for over a decade...

Pixar is tighter than the fucking NSA. I tried to get some basic info outta them a few years ago, and they sent their henchmen to have a chat with me.... one night... while I was sleeping... at 3 am.SIG TOO BIGComment

Acutally Renderman is what they use and it was never available for the mac but with the release of the G5 they are in the process of porting a version to the mac os. You can read about it on Apple's site.Comment

I think they've been using Silicon Graphics for the heavy heavy stuff and IRIX, but yes they do use macs for a lot of other stuff and a lot of companies use Shake on the mac too.Originally posted by Pornwolf

Almost all serious movie work is being done on Unix and Linux workstations and Linux servers these days.Originally posted by iroc409

Video editing is a miniscule part of the digital work on movies. It's effects creation and rendering that take up the time and costs money, and those tools are mostly Unix and Linux based these days, and have been for years.
Maya is one of the more popular heavy duty tools, and it is available on Linux.
However it's on the rendering side that Linux is most popular, and you wouldn't have heard about most of those tools unless you're a complete geek or work in the movie industry anyway, though it's quite heavily dominated by Renderman and tools that implement the Renderman API's or file formats.More traffic trades wanted (TGP, TGP2, CJ):
