Caught awhile ago on GFY link - Anyone?

Ok some time ago I started getting a stupid lil fucking annoying icon on my desktop. It appeared right after I clicked some link in a GFY post, can not remember which one, did not think of it when it happened either. Figured I would just run some shit and get rid of it later.

I notice Matt O has it as well (thanks to the post your desktop thread). I have ran spybot, adware, every antivirus I own, etc. Nothing gets rid of it.

Aside from format C or other stupid ass remarks, anybody have a clue what the hell it is and how in the hell to get rid of it?

    And from Mat O's Post.

go to task manager -> processes and see if any files exist having ~ and a number.

              this one might help http://securityresponse.symantec.com...r/FixNebiw.exe

If you want upload the file somewhere and post the link,we might be able to trace what is it and tell you how to get rid of it.

I had the very same thing happen to me about 2 weeks ago.
A little file named ~ appeared on the desktop.

This was the same time I got hit by the W32b/pate virus that was sent in email. I could not get rid of that "~" file till I got rid of the virus..which was NOT fun.

The ~ file is caused by a bug in some versions of Outlook. The file is actually a backup of your address book that Outlook cannot save to the proper folder.
Delete it, start up Outlook, close Outlook and you will see that the file is back. It's not a virus or spyware.
There is a patch or sp that will fix it, but I don't use Outlook so couldn't tell you where to go to get it, but I suspect a few google searches for Outlook Tilde bug or something like that may turn up more info.

I've been told it's a file that's supposed to be hidden but when you set your folders to display hidden files, it's suddenly there and drives you batty.

I try not to let it bother me, I think I'll assign a nice icon to it, to at least make it presentable.

Basically it is a corrupted system file. What happened is outlook and/or your system history files have either been corupted or fucked during a crash or power spike. Depending on how yoru system is configured it may have put that to your desktop on the reboot. Same idea with win9x when scan disk found corupted files and saved it for you to ovelook it.

it is quite possible that it is a trojan tracking all email adresses and such found in meta tags and html bodys in pages you have surfed. Just for that erason don;t be snooping in teh files yet. Get a trojan cleaner called "the Cleaner" search for it on google. Download, update and let it run 4 or 5 times. If the app found nothing, then start comparing teh contact and email adresses int hat file with emails in your delted items folder and if a bunch match up it was just fucked system files. Uninstall outlook and reinstall it.

                                Hope this helps some.

You mentioned it happened after you right licked. Is it possible that you migth have hit "email picture" or "email picture as" by accident?

It took 3-4 complete passes by McAffee's Virus Scan to get rid of it. And one reason is that somehow my attachable hard drive got infected too so after I cleaned my c&d hard drives and went to get something from the detachable, WHAM..everything got infected again.

Interestingly enough..no matter how many times I deleted the "~" file I could NOT permanently delete it till I got rid of the virus. It is possible that it was just a coincidence, but I didn't apply any patch to Outlook though.
