    300 GB Hard Drives!

300 Gb Hard Drives Are On Their Way!!

geez , ive only got a 120gb hd

    heres the article:

Maxtor is shipping a 300GB drive to stores. It retails for $399.95 and it utilizes Maxtor's ATA-133 interface. Maxtor's competitors use Serial ATA drives. An ATA-133 PCI adapter card comes with the drive.
However, Maxtor is emphasizing storage space over speed and the speed of the hard drive will only be 5,400 RPMs. Maxtor's Marketing Director, Anna Jen, emphasizes its "essential storage needed for extensive multimedia and digital applications."
Anna Jen adds: "Who would have ever imagined that so much capacity could be packed into a single, easily accessible, disk drive."

        It does on the 200's.

5400rpm sucks ass...Fuck them on size over speed.

Wester Digital Special Edition drives are up to 250gb's now at 7200rpm with an 8mb buffer. Perfect for video editing and storage.

My video editing machine is 2.8ghz P4 with 1 gig or ram and 500gb's of drive space. It is slow at defraging.

yeah, but there's a big problem with this. most hardware won't support it, and windows doesn't particularly like anything over 128gb. there are workarounds, but it'n not something you can usually just plop in and let it sing.

ah, yes i did. depending on the software that comes with the drive though, that still doesn't *necessarily* work. there's been a lot of issue with external usb/firewire drive boxes that have upgraded chipsets for larger drives, and windows still clips them. so really it's not just a hardware issue.

something like the promise sx4000 would most likely fix this, and since maxtor uses promise for thier cards, it would probably work with that.

We tested a Serial ATA drive last week, wicked fast, but it does get hot so make sure you have some fans in those babies.

The cards that come with the larger WD drives install as a scsi adapter and the drives work very fast.

Large ATA Harddrives = eventual death.

My 100GB drive just died this month after about a year or so. Check out the warranty on that 300 gigger probably wont be more than 2 years, if its even that long. Why not make something a bit smaller but more stable and 5400 is a joke.

                            Take Luck!

Just take 2 160 gig drives. Less headache, probably also cheaper and faster.

i wanna see them come up with 1TB drives. thats gonna be fun.

harddisk technology is getting really old. we need static memory, with much faster access times.
