I've also noticed that when you lie yourself all the time, like for example when you are telling a story, (ie something that happened to you) and you expand it a little to make it interesting. As you are telling that story over and over many times to people. You trick your mind, you actually start beliving the expanded story is the truth!! I think that's the casy here.
