    Domain Redemtion Period?

I did not renew one of my domains and I have tried to re-register at stargate and haven't been able to. I thought it was a bug in the system so I finally made a ticket. This was their reply.

Your domain is currently in a 30 day Redemption period with Verisign during which it will need to be restored to an Active status before we can renew it for you. During the Redemption period, only the previous owner of a domain name can restore it and only with the original Registrar they used. There is a redemption fee of $119.95 for you to restore a domain name at this time. Please tell me if you want to restore your domain or if you have any further questions.

    Thank you,

That's the way it works now.

If you let it go into redemption, you have to pay at least $100 to get it back.

The good news is that you still can get it back. In the old days, Stargate used to hit delete the day after it expired in many cases.

You won't get the name if it drops. Pay the money if it is worth anything to you. If you don't care about it, then no worries.

If you ever got it listed on any search engine anywhere, someone will steal... errr... register it right out from under you.

Before I started keeping track of my domains carefully I lost quite a few of my semi-important (and one VERY important) domains to people who grabbed them before I even got the notice in the mail that the domain was expiring. I won't use registrars that have no grace period anymore. Especially since I lost my paysite domain because my registrar for it didn't have a grace period and we took 3 weeks longer moving that we thought we would. Had no internet access and no clue it had even expired. I thought I actually had a month left on it. That's precisely why I try to keep better track of my domains now.

Sorry, I know it's not stealing since it was technically my responsibility to remeber to renew them. I'm just bitter over losing my recurring members. I'll get over it one of these days.

At least I have peace of mind now, knowing that if I end up in the hospital for a while or something in my life goes haywire, I'll at least have a grace period to get my domains taken care of if I ever happen to forget to renew well in advance again.
