    There was a major difference between the Soviet Union and the United States. We are capitalists...they were communists. Of course corporations would always be the main supplier. That is the way our system works, private corporations make money off of government contracts as well as , like above, by supplying foreign governments with certain things they would like to aquire.
    Two corrections. The materials being supplied by US Companies to Iraq were were not all (if any) via government contracts. Though the word "communists" is widely used it has never been accurate. There has never been a "Communist" nation in all of history.

    You cannot compare the system of the former soviet union to that of the United States - the government of the former soviet union would almost always be the main supplier because that is the way their government worked.
    I am aware of that.

    Our government props up and supports, or at least looks the other way when business supplies articles to other countries if it is in the best interest for them to do so. That was the case here.

    That was not the case here. When the Government learned what was being sold to Iraq and the uses that Iraq was applying to some of the materials being sold...the Government ordered the Department of Commerce to prohibit certain materials from being sold by American Companies...but even then a few greedy companies sold proscribed materials and had to pay a consequence. In addition it was not just American Companies that were selling dual use materials to Iraq.

                                        I've always wondered why poeple who say "clinton is a sex offender for getting his dick sucked" or "bush is hitler for bringing us to war" are considered anti-american.

                                        Why do you have to love your leader to love your country? Can't you think your leader is a pervert (clinton) or an asshole (bush) but still love your country? I know I do. I love a country that allows it's people to question and protest the acts of it's leaders, and reconizes that leaders are not gods, but people, and as such sometimes do bad things or make bad choices that need to be addressed.


                                        Everyone, let's face it....

                                        Bush isn't Htler, Clinton isn't Larry Flynt, but neither of them are perfect either.

                                        America can be a pretty kcik-ass place to live and it has it's share of great freedoms, but our leaders sure can be douches.
