Anyone ever hear of this? BS landlord

My landlord just called and told me they must have a copy of my most recent paystub. Is that legal to even ask a tenant for that? We signed a new lease 2 months ago. WTF? What, like they are going to make me pay more the next time I re-sign cuz I make more now than when I moved in?

What an asshole. Ask him what he's going to do to you if you don't provide this to him - and get it on tape. Then ask a lawyer.

Do you even have a "paystub" or just sponsor checks? Does he know you're self-employed?

i could see if you were signing a new lease, but if you have an existing lease that goes for 2 years, not sure why you would have to give it to him?

This is what I was thinking. Because I use to have to say that I was just 1099 & I would have to provide the 1099's from the year before!

But never on a lease, they only asked the first time I moved in!

It's a corporatly owned complex. Yes they asked for it two years ago and I gave it (as far as I can remember). The owners changed hands and since I have re-signed. Now they ask for it?

This isn't the only thing, they want photos of your pets on file, they wanted me to sign that I wasn't running a business out of my apartment (I am, I never signed, they can blow me), etc. Fuck! they want to know what times and how often I jack off too??? A DNA sample? Fuck them.

After thinking about it, I'm not giving them shit. I have a lease. They gave it to me. They want more? Fuck them, they had the chance to ask for it before.

Oh, and I have a day job (love health insurance too much to quit), a paystub in itself is not a problem. That's just not the issue. It's privacy. How many people out there do you want to know how much money you make every month?

If people knew how much I make a month. They would take my car away and I would never get a loan.

In short, in most states this is legal. As a landlord I will ask for paystubs as proof of employment. However, since the lease is already in effect, there is only one reason I can see for asking.

Chances are this complex gets government subsidies, similar to Section 8, but without the renter having to apply for section 8, etc.. If all of their tenants are below a certain income level, they can request for a tax credit from the state. This may not be known to the tenant and many properties do this without their tenants knowledge.

The other reason could be that they are selling the property, and want to show the prospective buyers that the tenants are gainfully employed and are able to pay their rents.

I would just ask, they should tell you without fuss.

Just my anyway. Hope it helps

                                  - David.

Say "OK, I will mail it to you no problem" then never mail it to them and don't answer the phone when they call for now on. Management companies are so lazy and lame they won't ever ask you again.

Seriously, or what if the person has money / is retired and doesn't work? I have rental property and I don't give a crap where or if the renter is employed as long as their rent is paid on time.

There's also the privacy they should respect... it really depends on where you live and how the local law rules in this case. Don't you have a local organisation that assists tenants in such cases ?
