I was listening to Radio2 the other day. They had much the same question. An 80yr old ex-nun phoned in with a reply something along the lines of....

'The only thing that confuses me these days is why the hell I ever believed in any of that rubbish. If you're going to believe in it then you may as well believe in the tooth fairy and santa claus.'

Do I believe that there is something out there higher and more powerful than all of us, yes. Do I believe this higher power wants us to kill each other based on belief/non belief? No.

I believe that they believe, which makes it all a little surreal. I have always been polytheistic and I pay more attention to the deities I need favors from. That's kinda how it goes.

I'm an agnostic. I believe that there is something above and beyond us, but I know it's nothing like the God that Christianity portrays.

Having studied in a catholic high school, I had quite a bit of exposure to Catholicism, for the most part, it sounds like rubbish to me.

But, you have to understand why people who believe in God do so. The idea of someone that loves you no matter what, someone who's always there to listen to you, someone you can always turn to for guidance and bla bla bla.

Believing this gives people a warm and fuzzy feeling, this is the only reason religion didn't die out like the old theories of the earth being flat and other nonsense from way back when.

Although if you read the bible, particularly Old Testament, there's plenty gruesome stories there about god slaying individuals or entire nations for some petty bullshit.

I aspire to Christian philosophies even respect Jesus as one of the most significant prophets in history, but I also believe he himself preached against religion (Matthew) and if historical artifacts from the era would not mysteriously vanish or get damaged, we would have a bit more clue as to real past events.

It's interesting to note that prior to the first crusade circa 1095 AD, most of Europe was not christian but pagan. It was the call by Pope Urban II for a holy crusade to the Levant that got the religious propaganda machine revving up for organized religion.

After all when faced with an 'with me or against me' mentality, individuals that stood to gain or lose a crown did not hesitate to convert their entire populations, whether they knew what was hapening or not.

In the case of the eastern empire, a new language complete with writing alphabet was developed, the inheritors being cyrillics and of course the Orthodox church which for the large part saw the Roman hierarchy and their rules, for the Bs that it is.

In Europe in particular, christianity was imposed by blade rather than the goodwill it preaches, so that makes the entire religion questionable. Practice what you preach, I think even Jesus said that. The cases I refer to is of course Spain and the inquisition designed to justify the conquest of Iberia by the Castillan royalty. In case you are not familiar this includes not just the notorious Inquisition but wide scale extermination of majority Moors and Jews who were most likely looking for a new home themselves after the eastern crusades failed. The catholics of course, beat the Jews to this sunny land, as they were included with the moors. No sooner did the spanish reach Gibraltar, I believe 1496 that they set sail to 'christianize' more pagan people, of course we all know about the friendly and humane conversion techniques used by the Conquistadors in the Americas.

I could also mention the assimilation of Lithuania by the Teutonic Knights when they lost their 'market' in the Holy Lands they were hired by the Holy Roman Empire for some backyard cleanup help. After a quick and bloody revolt suppression in Austro-Hungary, the Teutonic Knights, under the guidance of the church, descended on the officially pagan kingdom of Lithuania; back then a relative force. Again we are talking mass torture, mutilation and the gruesome medieval stuff we all still get goosebumps from. It's worth noting that this knightly order still exists and holds office in the vatican. Hmmm.

At one point around 1200 AD there were 2 popes battling each other with vast mercenary armies. The pope and the anti-pope. Fucking go figure what this was all about, but I think it doesn't take a genius to figure out it was not about piety and goodwill on earth..

This is the most accurate comment I've EVER seen someone besides myself say about religion. I have this conversation with my girlfriend, and I explain this to her... that basically religion is a way for people to have "faith" that their life isn't complete shit, that there will always be hope on the other side (heaven), and that you better keep your life straight or there will be consequences (hell). It really pisses me off that so many religions have such a literal interpretation of heaven and hell. It's only in your heads people!! Holey shit, I can't understand WHY people don't see this.

My gilfriend unfortunately is a former bible-college student, and most any debate that I have with her regarding her religion results in her getting extremely upset with me. Why can't people look at things more rationally... and see BEYOND what's been drilled into their heads since they were kids...

Yes I believe in God and was brought up Roman Catholic but I am against everything the Catholic church represents. The Catholic church is the most profitable non-profit organization and filled with a bunch of hippocrates.......no sex before marriage, no abortion, no this and no that but its okay that the priests can molest little boys and only get a slap on the wrist for it. If anything God should punish them if he is the almighty! I'm currently dating a guy whose family is diehard Catholic and they have been talking about if we ever get married it'll have to be in a church......Yeah right! Just because someone doesn't get married in a church does that mean that God won't bless you? I have always been told that God only dishes out to us what we can handle, how many people truely believe that?

The only God worth paying attention to is the one that made the universe, knows me by name, knows everything I do, and cares if I steal or cheat or murder, and would send me to Hell if I did. In other words, the God of the fundamentalist Christians.

I think the most lethal observation about the truth of religion, ANY religion is the fact that people tend to believe the religion THERE (whereever they are). In Asia, it's Buddhism, Hinduism, or Communism for the most part; in the Middle East it's Islam (except in Israel, where the religion THERE is Judaism). In Europe and the Americas, it's Christianity. I haven't covered the whole globe here (Africa, for example), but I think you can see that religion isn't so much about Truth as about Geography.
