I agree with you that it is certainly easier to sell what we like but it's definitely not a requirement. I'm straight and I design gay websites. So do most of the adult site designers. For example. I design mainstream sites too. I don't know anything about the law, or engineering, or medicine or most of the businesses I design websites for. But I've designed hundreds of sites for lawyers, engineers and doctors. I was able to give them exactly what they wanted by taking the time to do the research. Sure, after doing that I still wouldn't be able to pass the bar and perform laser eye surgery, but that's my point.
