Ok, I've got way too much work to do to read all the posts in this thread, but I just need to say something... I'm sure it's been said by someone else already because, believe it or not, there are a select few intelligent people on GFY.

First of all, I agree that some of the tactics that we use, especially in the US, to make people happy are a little out of control. I am especially angry about Affirmative Action, but that is only because I personally felt threatened that someone could achieve the same goals that I could but with less effort. It has nothing to do with hatred for a race, but the problem is that race is a large issue here. People think that because they are a minority or their relatives were repressed that they deserve boosts up in this world. I have many friends who are Black, Hindu, and Muslim, and luckily, they agree with me that it's nonsense because I try to surround myself with intelligent people (there's just enough here to keep me around). They think acts like Affirmative Action are a terrible insult to their culture, and I would agree wholeheartedly. I only ask that if everyone wants to be equal, then let them be equal. Reverse discrimination is as bad as discrimination, if not worse.

I am attacking the things in that paragraph that should be attacked. Racism is not the answer to the issue. Stereotyping by culture, race, gender, sexual preference, etc, is the most ignorant thing anyone could do. If you have something to say about one person, then say it. But don't attack them as a group.

I'm not all righteous myself. I've been known to burst because of certain things that piss me off, like I did in the second paragraph above, but by attacking groups of people with messages of hatred towards a stereotype is just foolish. If you met an alien tomorrow, and he was a total dick, would you automatically assume they all are? Better yet, what of the reverse? If that's the case, I hope that they attempt to seek out intelligent life instead of people like you, or we're all dead.

I'm just trying to prove a point. Racism is ignorance, and I hate being associated with a group of racist rednecks because I'm white. And that is what most people stereotype us as, just as you stereotype them.

Corporations are afraid of whoever will take customers away from them. US TV companies have shut down a huge number of series over the years over all kinds of boycot threats, including Soap and Alien Nation, where it definitively wasn't black people who wanted the shows terminated.

The latter is very interesting because most of the outrage against Alien Nation came from various conservaitve religous groups who obviously didn't like how the entire concept was based around exploring the complexities of interracial relationships, thinly veiled by introducing an alien species instead of black people. This is a pretty good example of how racism is still affecting society in a very real way.

I think most of the reasons why so few TV shows dominated by black people get protests is because shows with mostly white people still dominate, and because most of the black only TV shows are a reaction on that in some ways.

Cosby Show, for instance led the way by presenting a wealthy black family with parents in highly prestigious jobs, and still managing to turn into a huge mainstream hit, yet if white people were to protest against the mostly black cast, it would be hypocrisy given the much larger number of family based shows with all white casts.

Still, even now, how many leading roles for well funded shows that are being made available are truly open to black actors? I don't think it's a matter of intended racism, but more a case of most people looking for something familiar unless consciously deciding to look for something else.

If you're white TV exec, and start planning a show that isn't consciously placed in a setting where you'd assume lots of black people, or you don't consciously look to make the cast diverse, would you be likely to look for a black lead? You might not specifically say to the casting people that you are looking for a white person, but how many of them will consider a black person unless they are asked specifically for a black person?

It is very easy for me as a white person to see a series with black leading actors as a "black" series, while I wouldn't see a series with white leading actors as a "white" series unless I'm thinking about it, because series with mostly white people is what I'm used to.

It's a result of white dominated series being the norm, and black television being something relatively new.

I think it's needed in order to get a viable outlet for non-white actors until a large enough number of them are well enough known also to white people that they get an easier time crossing over into mainstream - White people don't need that, because they're already in the mainstream. I'm not saying that lower standards should be applied to black actors by the TV studios, but that black actors are more likely to not be considered for roles that aren't specifically written as "we need a black guy here to make this situation work".

And the moment mainstream shows are as culturally diverse as the real world, there is no reason to complain about either purely white shows or purely black shows.

As it is, though, racism is still there in a wide variety of forms.

What's less popular to say is that in a way you are right, there is racism against white people by blacks as well, but I would say it's there on a much more personal level. You're unlikely to lose out on a job opportunity over being white, simply because of the way society is wired makes it extremely hard for a black racist to get to any position of power, while it makes it quite easy for a white racist to do so, provided it's not too overt.

But you might find plenty of black people who will threat you on a personal level in much the same ways as a white racist would treat a black person.

I didn't really think of that side of it until I got into a relationship with a Nigeran girl who is now my fiancee, and even then she has been the one to point out how some people she know threat me very different from how they treat black people, and how a few of her friends make it very clear that they disapprove of her being with a white man.
(at which points she tries not to mention that I'm an atheist - her entire family is catholic -,and 9 years older than she is )

Agreed... Chris Rock is hilarious, and he's serving an important role in making it easier to joke about things that are ridiculous but that white comedians don't dare touch because they'd end up being considered racist.

That's the way it's always been. There are plenty of jews that have no probems telling morbid jokes about the holocaust, or bring out sterotypes of greedy jewish merchants etc., while the same jokes coming from non-jews would be considered racist or at least tasteless.

My fiancee, who is black and from Nigera, often tells me jokes about black people that she's heard from her friends that would be considered extremely racist coming from a random white person.

The most important distinction, though, is that it isn't all about the race of whoever tell the joke, but about how well you know them.

I wouldn't hesitate to tell my fiancee jokes about black people that many people would consider racist, because I know that she knows I'm not a racist, and wouldn't look for racism as a possible motivation for me telling the joke.

I would however not tell jokes like that to someone I'd just met, whether white or black, because they have no way of telling whether I'm telling them a potentially racist joke because I'm racist or just because the punchline is funny.

It's a big difference finding a joke funny because the situation presented in it is funny, or funny because you hate the race of whichever person the joke is ridiculing.

It's just the same thing as calling a black person a ****** is ok if you're black yourself, but a problem if you aren't because unless you're saying it to a close friend they have no way of knowing the intent behind the word - whether it is motivated by hate and racism, or whether it for you is just a natural part of conversation.

I'm tired of this shit... if you want to be my fucking friend don't ask me for favors unless you plan to compensate. 99% of the time black guys are just hustling me for money or my resources... even after we have a mutual respect... Money for my kid's field trip, help me make a CD for my music, can you buy me some smokes, can you pay for me to get in the club... You know I'm tired of that shit... I'm tired of black people playing con artist when I am being real with them... I've given handouts to a lot of black people that have asked for it over the years... I've paid my dues... it's never ending... I'm turning capitalist -- I'm tired of this shit. Friendship doesn't involve money unless you've know the person for at least a year...

Beware of black guys that calls you a "friend" too soon. I've noticed this is a common tactic of con artists... Lots of these "cool" black guys will deliberately pretend to be your friend -- fantastic acting ability... just scam artists... my best friends don't call me friends -- you BE a friend. Don't ever call me a friend unless I've known you for at least a year.

I've never had this problem with other nationalities/races/whatever -- just black people -- even the really fucking poor friends that I have that can barely afford to feed themselves. This is probably the most racist thing I've ever written -- and in this biz it's probably stupid for me to say it because all the black people that I've met in this biz have been really cool with me so far -- but I think my bad experiences should be pointed out -- don't call your friend a "friend" and be tactful with favors. The best favors are the ones offered freely and the ones that don't have any obligations attached.
