Hotlink Protector (http://www.hotlinkprotector.com) is the newest, safest, easiest, and most efficeint program out there that protects your files from being hotlinked.
Protects all file types (.asf .wmv .avi .mov .mpg .mpeg .rm .jpg .jpeg .gif), you can add or remove filetypes as you please

No cookies requried for Hotlink Protector to work, no jav.a.scrip.t either.

Does not require any changes to special coding to be made to your HTML pages

Designate an infinite amount of domains as "safe" domains, where users from any "safe" domain are able to download from your server

Detailed logging that shows the sites that have tried to hotlink your content, amount of accesses blocked for each file and domain, a list of files that were protected from hotlinking, as well as statistics to show how much bandwidth you have saved.

Well JPG and GIF can easily be done in htaccess. But movies is a bit harder, and especially for TGP posters, who can't use cookies and such things

People should love the idea of protecting their bandwidth. I had my 88pergig account hotlinked one month and cost me over 400.00 that's a lot of money on top of my regular bill!

SIG TOO BIG! Maximum 120x60 button and no more than 3 text lines of DEFAULT SIZE and COLOR. Unless your sig is for a GFY top banner sponsor, then you may use a 624x80 instead of a 120x60.

i know the feeling.. this is one of the main reasons i made this script, and made it affordable. phatforums, dirtymessages, xxxmoviemart, etc are all fucking hotlinking theives. im sure that they in their lifetime have cost webmasters hundreds of thousands of dollars in bandwidth bills.

What if you have a page with 6 mpgs on it and you want the
surfer to be able to download just one of them say

video1.mpg but not the other 5 mpgs on the same page.

does the code protect the whole page or can you pick and choose which files on the page you want protected?

i dont really know why you would want to do that.. but yes, you can do what you like in the script. although this option is not in the general script (as i dont see why you would want to do this), ill modify the script for you if you like

itll work fine.. the script is made to protect domains - dns doesnt really matter

So you are using mod_rewrite and checking the Referer String. If the Referer string matched any of the authorized domains allow the download if not redirect it to some other page.
Empty referers are not allowed.

Can you please explain where the "complex algorithm" kicks in?

If this does the trick...hmm... manipulating referers is so easy:

wget --referer "http://www.angelmovies.net/protected.html" http://www.angelmovies.net/movie.mpg

Hacking 101. Sorry.... You're product doesn't work.

If there is some interest I developed a "hotlinking protection" for our paysite that works regardless the referer. If there is some interest I could release it as a product or something.

Two flaws
1) who in the world is going to do something like that to download a freaking movie from a gallery
2) the script can be set to make it so referrers do not matter at all - it can be made so a person must visit the page before being able to download a file, referer regardless

probably there are some windows tools with a nice gui that allows joe everage to manipulate the referer.
If you do not rely on the referer than you must store some other information to identify the user:
a temporary cookie comes to my mind if you want to enable it over different servers. but in your specs you state that you do not use cookies.

I am curious how you would do it? Unless you go for the ip which is not reliable.

I have seen about 500 diffrent version of this same technologies. It is called URL obfuscation. The idea is that you protect, hide, or encrypt the link to the content, and that in theory should protect the content.

However this is the wrong way to approach the problem. The only secure way to protect the content is through file level digital rights management.

It stops everything from hot linking to password trading. It even allows you to float content into the peer 2 peer networks and allows you to still control the content.

Like I said, it is the ONLY way to really secure your content.

Remember, i said that the downloads can be controlled either from referrer, or not.

Try downloading the file again.. there is no way you can download it (even by setting the referrer to www.angelmovies.net/protected.html in flashget) unless you view the page.

actually he did not win.

before, the script checked if the referer was the page with the movie. but the script can also only allow downloads to files if a user has visited the page. Ask him to try and download the file again.. he will be unsuccessful

go try your flashget thing again, set the referring url to http://www.angelmovies.net/ and download http://www.angelmovies.net/movie.mpg... you wont be able to unless you view the page
