    About RackShack

    Hello

Does Anybody have their servers with RackShack ?

How the service is, speed, etc...

I heard that they are using Cogent, and it's not a good thing... True ?

    thanks in advance

Good. Make sure you know what you're doing, because their support is not to be relied on. You get what you pay for in that regard, but for the last 18 months (thereabouts) I have had zero issues with slowness. I do about 300GB a month off the server with no speed issues.

aside from them being Linux machines instead of FreeBSD, no hassles at all.

I have heard of some LL/TGPs banning RackShack IPs, but since I don't submit these URLs, I don't know of this first hand.

Rackshack is great for cheapskates like me. If you can admin your own server, there is no better deal out there right now.

I've got 7 boxes with them. I like them. If you know how
to admin your own servers, then they have probably
the cheapest prices around. And the other thing
i like is that when you buy a server you get immediate
access to it. There's no waiting around a few days for
          setup.

so if you don't know how to setup the server, you're pretty much up shit creek without a paddle?

              The Good:

No Cogent (hardly) on the metered servers, good if not the very best bandwidth.

Unbelievable uptime - I've been down about 6 minutes in 6 months.

Great users' forum to help out.

I pay $250 each for dual dell xenon servers with 1000 GB of bandwidth per box!

Their tech support (if you can call it that) rocks. Need a reboot? Typically 15 minutes. That is the most tech support I ever want, I don't want some kid who thinks he knows Linux messing up my server, and at RS you don't have to even give them a password, cause its all your problem anyway.

              The bad:

No real tech support. You can get a so called "control panel", but you'll still be doing your own upgrades weekly and new kernels a few times a year. Oh yeah, you can skip that for a while, and end up like hundreds of other newbies who had their boxes taken over by spammers and unpluged by RS. This chews up a lot of time - recently I spent about 10 hours on a problem when Red Hat screwed up a new kernel.

They get DOS attacks a lot. Some RS users in unlucky subnets have had shitty bandwidth, occasionally for weeks or more.

              The ugly:

When they screw up, its royal. They have formatted disks on the wrong box, gave the same ip address out twice, etc.

              Overall:

If you are a propeller head like me, go for it. They are the largest, cheapest, and best by far.

If you are not a linux guru, be very afraid.

The server is ready to run when you get it. You don't have to do any setup, just any server administration that needs done is usually going to be your problem. There are lots of cheap admins like me who will whore themselves out for an hour or so to help you get things done.

so for things like kernel updates and shit, how much would someone like you cost? and typically how many times per year would i need to seek outside help for the server?

Yes they use cogent, but thats not where the bulk of there traffic is passing, in fact check the link below they show their network usage by carrier on mrtg. I wish all hosts would step up to the plate and do the same

Bingo - looks like A&H just gave you guys an offer that is hard to refuse. I'll vouch for his integrity - he has access to my machines (since I am a repeat customer of his script business and he has gone above and beyond the call of duty in offereing me top notch customer service) - the guy knows his shit, and is cool to deal with. I trust him, and I normally don't trust anyone as far as I can throw them.

What the rest have said really. One of my servers is there with less 'critical' stuff on it and no real complaints. As long as the most tech support you will need is reset (or in one case a re-format due to a hack) then they are superb.

Are you guys on cogent, or do use other bandwidth?
That pricing on the 100Mbps is amazing.

RS owns, i got a 10mbpd cogent server, but me personally dont see a problem my server has never gone down, if i needed support/upgrade it was done within a day or so, ip requests, and all that other great shit is handled quick.

but if you dont know what your doing dont bother, sure they run rh linux instead of feebsd, but for the price its a real good deal, and like everyone has said, you have your server right then and there, no waiting days to get started
                                        blah blah fucking blah

I got 4 servers with them.

How can anyone beat this price $400 a month for a 10mb connection (un-metered), over a gig of ram and tons more.

Rackshack is AWFUL. We've had several major outages, fiber cuts, etc. Our equipment is low priority there, you are not permitted to talk on the phone to the person that is fixing the problem or even anyone in the department where the problem is. And there are a LOT of problems. Surprisingly none were caused by Cogent that I am aware of.

Seriously, the equipment could be down for weeks and nobody would either notice or care. I'd recommend going somewhere else. We're pretty happy right now at Webair.

The only thing reliable at Rackshack is the billing.

Do you only offer windows servers? I had a quick peek
at your site, and just saw windows. I've been accused
of being blind before though, so maybe i just missed
it if you also offer linux, or free bsd.

I set a server up with them last year and made them aware of what I needed beforehand.

Told them I didn't need much bandwidth starting off until I had my freehost ready to go (finished setting it up/doing all tests to make sure everything worked properly, etc.) and asked if it would be possibly to upgrade a 10Mbps line after 2-3 months.

Yeah sure not a problem they told me....turned out to be a big problem.

Once the time came for an upgrade they told me it wasn't possible at the time....that they had nothing in stock for me and weren't sure when they would.

So I wasted a couple months getting everything ready and paying server fees for nothing.

                                                    Thanks Rackshack

RS is growing so fast that they run out of servers all the time, sometimes for weeks. But they keep building datacenters and expanding, so as new servers come in (sometimes hundreds at once) they put them up as fast as they can.

I try to anticipate my usage over the next couple months, and keep a server in reserve, because the thought of going anywhere else is so unpleasant.

From what I see in the forums about 3/4 of the users seem to be hosting companies, and from time to time you do see complaints of not enough servers.

Take it over, I have no use for it anymore, I have moved all of my stuff to a real host, Webair, as of yesterday.

It's a 10 megabit unmetered for $400 a month plus tax. Email me at mike AT virtucon.net and it can be yours. They might charge you to do a wipe and restore - we've disabled a lot of the software that you might want (ensim). I don't know if they'll allow me to sign it over but we can give it a try.

Oh, you might have to BUY MY CONTENT as part of this deal. It's good. And not hosted at rackshack.

Then I had some hell changing the dns on my servers. Finally got it going and wrote a pretty nice tutorial there at their ensim forums... As far as support goes, many knowledgeable people at their forums.. The RS tech support is good but wont help you with anything beyond what you bought (everything is basically self -serve).

Reason ? It starts with there uptime guarentee. There isn't one. They guarentee absolutely no uptime at all. You have no recourse if their network dies for days. Their techies are monkeys. If your lucky, your okay, if your unlucky, your memory gets trashed or your hard disk gets unmounted. I havn't got time to mess around with my servers, I need a control panel. They unfortunately do not supply the best (cpanel), you are stuck with ensim crap etc. Their billing is dept is awful. Their metering of bandwidth is prone to mistakes, and they don't listen if you open a bandwidth metering problem. They use Cogent (still). There are reports of capping. Their network is targetted with above average frequency by hackers. Spammers have got some of their blocks of IP's banned.

I could go on, but you get the picture. Search there own forum for more info on all these problems.

If you want good hosting, check out some "big" adult sites and look up their DNS to get an idea of what hosting they're using. Always go with a reliable host already being used by websites larger than your own. Example, candidhosting.com

                                                                            Webair Hosting
