Having seen every episode of each. Simpsons overall is funnier than Family Guy.
Family Guy is very funny. Toilet type humor and jokes on the handicap and race and ethnic jokes are awesome. The writing over all comes no where near to the Simpsons. The types of humor in the 2 are almost 2 different ends of the spectrum. The social commentary is very similar, but the overall shots are better taken on the Simpsons.Comment

It's funny sometimes, but there's no way it'll have the longevity that the Simpsons has had. I don't know that the Simpson's is funnier from episode to episode, but the Simpsons has been the most consistently funny show on tv.Comment

I am on a Simpsons boycot after seeing the episode last Sunday where they all wind up fighting in the baseball field, but when they realize they are wrong they decide to sing a song, and it is not a quote but "not a warmongering song like the American anthem" and all wind up singing Oh Canada while lined up in the shape of a clover leaf.
Then they finish by having Bart and Milhouse agreeing that fighting isn't the way to solve problems "Except for all of Americas" and that is a pretty close quote...

If your a fan of Family Guy I suggest you pick up the new 4 DVD box set of seasons 1 and 2. I got it for about $35 at best buy. And you can catch all the old episodes on Adult Swim on the Cartoon Network.Comment

I love The Simpsons but to tell you the truth I hated Family Guy when I first started watching it but now its funny as hell! Did anyone see the episode when Stewie was trying to teach that little english girl how to speak properly?
If anyone is a big fan of The Simpsons and Family Guy then you should try Futurama with Bender the robot! That is some funny stuff. The voice of Leela is the woman who plays Peg Bundy on Married with Children. I believe it comes on @ 11p.m. Eastern time on the Cartoon Network! Pretty funny!

Longevity? it was cancelled after the third season and the "when you wish upon a weinstien" episode dedicated to making fun of jews. Went three seasons and they were just starting to peak.
Show was just raw and funny as fuck and went places the simpsons would never go.

I think it's hard to compare Family Guy and the Simpsons because their humor stems from different things.
Personally, I may not be in tune with the intelligent,
"underlying" humor of the simpsons, but nothing makes me laugh like Family Guy.
I guess that means I do prefer toilet-type humor. Regardless, my opinion is that Family Guy's humor is way more accessible to people, it's a shame that the writers have to go to such extremes for their material though.Comment

The Simpsons is smarter and The Family Guy is cruder. It just depends how you like to get your laughs. I prefer smarter. The Simpsons is so funny sometimes that your head almost explodes, but you don't neccessarily die laughing. You just love it.Comment

i love both shows, being a hardcore simpsons fan i'd say the older simpsons episodes are better than family guy but the new ones, just aren't that great. family guy was more offensive, more out there, more willing to take risks than the simpsons ever where, and the pop culture references are the best. there are times i prefer family guy over the simpsons and vise versa.Comment
