Mailwasher Pro runs in my system tray and auto checks every 60 seconds. If something comes in from a domain that's on the blacklist, it's auto-bounced and deleted from the server without me ever seeing it. If it's legit, the icon flashes telling me I got new mail. From there I can open Outlook and down it.
With this setup, I never have to think about checking mail, I get any new mail virtually instantly, and the crap, junk, & spam is taken care of without me even expending energy to do it.

I always have outlook open, any time any mail comes in I get that beep and little icon in the system tray so I pop it open.

Lately I rarely consciencely run e-mail in the background. Once I launch it it usually runs until reboot or accidental double-click on the X If I'm having an e-mail exchange I'll check every few minutes after sending my last reply otherwise it checks every 30 minutes. I found it easier to filter in what I want than to worry about everything else so I gave up the inbox. I check my friends/family & business folders a few times a day and dump out the other folders once a week or so.

Between biff on my box and my Blackberry, I don't check email, it notifies me.
How often do I deal with it? Porbably 10 to 15 times an hour. It's polite to get back to people as soon as possible.
