Don't whine about low prices on Elance
Wow, I sure won't whine about any low prices. I'm seeing one
huge price. eLance wants to charge me $180 for the privilege of
bidding on your server transfer. All I can say to them is GFY.
Those guys and gals bidding on eLance must have an aweful hard
time getting any work if they're paying $180 just to put in a bid.
Makes me thankful that I've never had to do anything like that -
word of mouth has always kept me busy.

You know, you could have posted on here for recommendations
and you'd have found several people who would do an excellent job
at an excellent price. People probably would have given you my
name as well as several other good admins who have a done a
good job for them at good price.
They'd have told you that if you have a mission critical site
that needs to stay "up" during the whole transfer process,
I could set up an exceptionally smooth transfer for you.
They may have also mentioned other people also capable of
moving your sites in such a way as to keep all of your databases
synced up right and all, which can be a real problem if
some JA doesn't know what he's doing thinks it's enough to just
copy everything from one to server to the other and then switch
    the DNS with the registrar.
Had you then followed up with me and were still not confident in
your choice, I would have given you the name of the guy I
did the server transfer for last weekennd.
His site got about 100,000 hits over the weekend, all of which needed
to be recorded properly in his database.
Having traffic going to both servers for several hours would
have been completly unacceptable, as the database would
have gotten totally out of whack.
He would have told you that he was happily suprised to see
what I was able to transfer compeltely seamlessly wiith a
downtime of update 6 minutes as I updated the database
on the new server upon shutting off the old one.
He would have told you that he figured my price was too low so
he insisted on paying a bit more.

Why the heck not use this board to see who had done a good job
for others around here? It works. On eLance you just end up
with the guys who can't get a referal to save their life, so they
pay eLance $180 for the privilege of putting in a bid that they
hope will be lower than what a pro would charge.
Thing is, most of those guys take 8 hours stumbling through
a 1 hour job, so those of us who are professionals
    can actually give
you prices that are nearly as low and often lower because
moving 27 sites from one server to another isn't a 3 day ordeal for us.
Good luck with it though. Actually I'm interested to know whether
or not you get lucky. Can you drop me an email at [email protected]
after the server transfer is done and let me know how many days
it took to get everything working right on the new server and how
    how much you paid?
If I'm wrong, and your sites actually get moved over quickly
without having scripts broken for days and losing data from things
that happen during the transfer, I'd like to actually eat my crow.

If you still have some time left after posting more than a screen full of whining about elance, you are very welcome to send me your quotation by email: os{at}jennycards.com.
