Aside from the whole content thieving bastards issue, let me answer your question.
I've done some research and design work on such systems for two clients.

What you do is but a nntp feed from one of the major providers,
the same guys that your local ISP buys news feeds from.
            That'll run you $200-$800 / month.
Then you spend $1,000 on custom programmingand you've got
yourself a kickass "web to news gateway".
Then you spend another $1,000 with a good lawyer who knows the field
so you don't get in serious shit for copyright infringement.
There's one such lawyer in Alabama who knows all about these sites.

Not true at all, I run and have run Usenet groups for awhile.

The script to manage the users costs around $400 one time fee.

Next you will need to find a GOOD isp to suck feeds from.

UUNet has all of them, a little more then 700k of them, they sell it by bandwidth access.

Usenet providers dont put anything in the news feeds, images movies, its all posted by users.

So no, Usenet providers arent content thieves, usenet was here before the internet was thank you very little.

I have around 200 members to my feed, and sure its not a ton of people but its getting better, I charge them $39.95 per month to dl all of the newsgroups, it has a 14 day retention period and they can suck 5 gigs of bandwidth a day.

And Raymor, Usenet providers cannot be sued for what is posted with people getting access from them, no more then your isp could be sued for what you are posting on GFY. I suggest you get a new lawyer, considering EVERY isp has newsgroups, wether or not they carry them all is up to them.

If ya dont know, then dont say shit.
