Too bad they don't franchise, It's 100% company owned.

There was a good article about getting a franchise for Krispy Kreme in Money or Forbes or something like that a while back. They like you to have a proven track record running multiple fast food franchises and to buy 2 or 3 franchises together.

T, your house should be OK - the only real problems we had was flooding - we managed to miss all really bad crap you guys got on what looked like a constant basis Since you're not in a valley or on a river/creek/stream/branch, I wouldn't worry about it. If you want, email me at peaches at onlinebeach dot com with directions and I'll run up and check on it for ya just to make sure! It will give me an excuse to go up there and run by Wendy's for a salad, hehehe.

20+ so years ago the CFA franchises were $5K but they could kick you out whenever they wanted. From what I found on Google, now they're about $500K but from what I've heard, they can STILL kick you out whenever they want, lol! I would suspect that if someone wanted "in", CFA would know more about them before saying "Yes" than their own Mama knows

Inconvienently located for everyone outside of the Northwest -- Gotta go with Burgerville! In and Out was cool in the past, but Burgerville is the bomb!

Mike, I have a friend in Tampa that you may know that is selling something like 100 Wendy's Restauraunts....why not just buy his?
I will just take out my checkbook and write a check!

Actually, some of my partners from another business have been looking to diversify a little. We all have different ideas...

Franchising seems to work best on a large scale... owning 1 place will not get you to far.

My partners want to do something locally in NO first... I see the benefits, but I think Florida is growing much faster, and franchise reasturants do not do as well in New Orleans where there are so many great places to eat.

I am most intreagued by the sports bar - Buffalo Wild Wings.... but my thinking is that we could start our own sports bar, not sue why we need to be part of a franchise for that. I read the rules they are VERY strict, and do not let people change things up. Which again in New Orleans, I think is a mistake, a place like this should be able to offer daily dinner/lunch specials that are New Orleans inspired ( red bean and rice, crawfish, jambalaya, etc)

                Thanks for all the feedback....

T, seriously I will let Sig know about Wendys in Tampa....

The problem with franchises is it's like working for the mob. You had a fire, fuck you, pay me. Sales were bad, fuck you, pay me. My best friend owned a Domino's franchise for 5 years and in his best year he made $50k working 80 hour weeks. His plan was to open around 10 stores but he said it would have killed him to have to manage that many teenagers. He sold that and bought into a golf course. He still works 80 hours a week but at least he loves his job now and is happy. He was so miserable at the end with his Domino's store I didn't even want to hang around with him anymore. Bottom line, if you buy a franchise you better be commited to it 24/7/365 or it won't succeed.

Someone said Claim Jumpers. I do not know anything about their franchise availabilities, but I have eaten there in PHX and SEA and both were fantastic....and PACKED with people.

My suggestion is P.F. Changs, but I am almost sure that they require you to manage a location for 2 years before they will make you a partner (what they call their franchise owners).

I don't know if they have franchises, either.

I agree with Quiet. Way too much work for too little return. Even if you do well and make MILLIONS, you'll be working your ass off at least 80 hours a week. I'd rather build a kick-ass porn movie website and watch the dollars roll in.

But seriously, if that was the only job in the world and I had to pick a franchise or die poor and homeless I suppose I'd go for either TGI Friday's, Pizza Hut, or Papa John's. All 3 are already successful worldwide without being too oversaturated.

Edit: On a slightly unrelated note, we are FINALLY getting a Pizza Hut within reasonable driving distance of my house here in the UK! I love their pizza but there is no way I'll drive over an hour just to get there. Not just for pizza.

An interesting book to read, that addresses some of the franchising issues, is Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser.

And if you're thinking of opening your own restaurant, read Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain

Even if you don't plan on doing either, they're good reads!

Sweet T you can franchise a Chik fil A. I don't know the exact details on who owns what or whatever, but I do personally know someone who has 3 of them in Mobile, AL. 2 in malls and 1 free standing store. (A new thing they started in the last few years)

Convenience stores/gas stations are definitely not the business to get into. That's the business I was in before I started this. Alot of the bigger chains have filed for bankruptcy and alot more are very close to it.
Mike AI you know about EZ Serve in New Orleans (that's who I worked for, I left about 6 months before they went under) They're all CLOSED.

The problem is two-fold, one is that more and more grocery stores and drug stores are 24 hour operations now, whereas in days past the local convenience store was the only option you had in the middle of the night.
Two is that companies like Wal-Mart are in the gas station business now, and they run those little stores at a loss to help drive more business to their big store. The little stand alone stores can't compete with that.
When its all said and done the only ones left standing will be the big ones like Wal-Mart (who will of course raise their prices once the competition is out of business like they always do) and the convenience store chains owned by actual oil companies. (Racetrac, Speedway, Shell etc)
Gas "resellers" (or jobbers as they're called in the biz) who buy the gas from shell or exxon or whoever and mark it up at the station won't be able to compete pricewise and will go under. Plus their second biggest seller behind gas is tobacco, and with all the lawsuits/new taxes on tobacco the profits have dwindled on those as well.

Unless you own your own oil refinery I wouldn't invest any money into a convenience store/gas station.
                                sig too big

I know the income wouldn't be that great, but I would LOVE it:-)

A chain that seems to be expanding pretty well is Quiznos.

Food is good, and the Franchise fee is roughly $80k. (or at least it was a few years ago when I looked into it)

Oh yeah? Thats no good. For some reason I thought they were farming the things out. The profit margin on the one just off 680 in the Dublin/San Ramon area must be obscene.

I was just talking to Crystal about how I want to open some sort of a BBQ/Grill place in town.

I know the income wouldn't be that great, but I would LOVE it:-)

His up Mike McReynolds about this as well... He was telling me before he has a few friends who own restaurant chains.
I've always teased my boys that I want to open an 'midscale' 24 hour place a bit like the 13 Coins up here and call it "I Don't Know". That way when someone is asked what they want for dinner and they say "I don't know" they know right where to go ;)

Haha. There's a bar around here called "Somewhere Else" for pretty much the same reason.

Its funny you ask this question, I accually own partnership on a franchise with a buddy of mine, we opened it about 9 months ago and its going very well. Its a Quiznos. Quiznos is accually the fastest growing franchise. Subway is a very good competitor, but subway costs much more to get started. Just remember location is everything, reglardless of what franchise you choose to go with.

I looked into Krispy Kremes a while back. Unfortunately they don't want inexperienced franchisees, and wanted $10 million cash minimum, for at least a ten franchise region. Not a business you can really start out with. Sounds like a good idea from their perspective though, weeding out the lightweights.

I think it's a good sign when a franchisor won't take any idiot, the ones who will take anybody who can scratch $25,000 together are usually the shitty ones and the ones who just want to pocket the 25 grand and move on to the next one, leaving the franchisee's up the creek.

I wanted a Dairy Queen, just the ice cream store not the Brazier food restaurant, their application form was extremely thorough and they wanted I think a net worth of $500,000, and that was 10 years ago. I didn't have that and they really wanted to sell those restaurants but for the right high traffic location they would still do the ice cream only store.

smart guy. in the right location a Dairy Queen is a goldmine. i know a guy who makes a fortune on ONE store, working 5 months a year, cuz in a cold weather city you only really have May-September. But people go ice cream crazy in the summer season. i'd still rather hit a Dairy Queen on a hot day than a Baskins Robbins or Ben and Jerry's.

Quizno's is definitely a franchise gathering alot of steam.

Subway doesn't give you enough territory, if your store is a success, they'll open up another one close by, too close. McDonald's franchisees got hurt by that too, they cannibalize their own stores by opening too many that encroach on each other's market.

Actually, Subway's the one franchise that's most likely going to work you over. The details are described in Fast Food Nation, but the gist of the message is that many franchisers needed to operate two or more Subway restaurants in order to make a decent living.

Franchising is a way for Big Business to get additional subsidies from the government, and for them to minimize their risks while expanding.

McDonald's franchisees got hurt by that too, they cannibalize their own stores by opening too many that encroach on each other's market.
McDonald's franchisees are suing them at the moment for cutting their territories. Subway is the absolute worst for this. They'll sell a store a block away from you if you are doing well just to collect the franchise fee. If you have the money to run 30 Subway franchises you can make nice money but you also need a lot of people involved to make it happen. Like I said earlier, it's like working for the mob, fuck you, pay me.
