i have an inspiron and it works great. lil on the heavy side (noticed that going to conventions, i know it sounds weak, but luggin around all your luggage + a heavy lappy is a fuckin bitch) but a great computer. ive had it 3 years and it hasent errored once.
want to buy this spot for cheap? it is of course for sale. long term deals are always the best bet. brand0n/ at/ a o l dot commies.

Depends on what she is using it for. I got the 8100 inspirion a couple of years ago..Its still going strong. This thing does weigh a ton though, so I can suggest something light weight...girls love to transport their laptop around.

I've had two Dell laptops (8100 and just bought a new Inspiron 8500) and have never had any issues. A bunch of my people all have Dells and they work great, plus any problems we've ever had, a Dell rep shows up the next day to fix them (probably had to have him visit 3 times in 2 years between about 20 laptops).

she will be using it for going to graduate school, I don't think she will really be lugging it around as much as she is concerned with the space taken up vs a desktop

Stay away from 300m, I returned it and got another model. It was very light and such and good for the executive looking at email but not the hardcore porn fiend and photchop stud like myself

I think the most intensive program she will be running is Microsoft Word, or Excel.

Mailnly she does school papers and research

I upgraded to the 8500 series Inspiron or 8 something series with the WIDEEEEE screen........ very happy with it. The 300m for the price wasnt worth it tbh. I got more value and more features with the 8 series Inspirons

In the UK these have been big problems with Dell.

The main reason for this is that they moved there call centre to India, and many people have had problems when they need technical advise. Dell have said they will improve on this, but it looked bad for them.

It was on UK BBC2 'Watchdog' a week or so ago.

But if she is only using it for word processing, I would be tempted to opt for a second hand laptop, or a hand held.

I found a hand held was far more use than a laptop as I took it all over (just fit in my pocket). It was great taking it to the library and on the train. Sure laptops or portable, but they are still bulky and batteries are not as good - plus more chance of being stolen.

All I did then was transfer my work to a pc, and tidied it up a bit before printing it out.

But I would think a cheap lap top (second hand) would be more use, and if it got broke or stolen (as long as her work was backed up), its not a big problem.

I have seen in the UK P133 going for £100, and even better, they are usually full of software too.

Cheap, get an 1100. More expensive, get a 8600 with the wide screen. And always get the extended warranty :-)
