Actually, I have sites that I designed that convert better than the great $ 1500 design I bought.
If you have what they want to jerk to, the surfer will join an site that is not designed by a professional.
A nice design just gets them in the door. It is the owner's buying of content and updating on a very regular basis that keeps them around.
