It seems like there are two paths that a porn starlette can go.
One is grow in popularity and exposure. Become more marketable and desirable. Jenna Jameson is the poster girl. This is as rare as winning the lottery.

Far more common is that the more exposed they are, they less they get paid. After a year or two, if they are not on the ?star? path, then they have used up their 'fresh face' marketability. They then have to do more extreme scenes to make the same money.

(But both paths increase the money they can make feature dancing.)

Is that accurate? Are there other things I'm overlooking?

(I'm not involved with content production...yet...just fascinated)
I'm no expert but I do talk to lots of people who are.

Majority of girls who come into porn are not looking to be the next Jenna Jameson or to raise their feature dancing profile or create one. Most are in it for the money and some the money and the thrills. Gonzo movies, the type RedlightDistrict, Anabolic, the web reality sites, that's where the action is these days - new girls can work a TON doing gonzo - but to keep working consistently in gonzo a girl has to do anal, once everybody's had their crack at her as 'new girl' material, then she has to do anal, after everybody's got their first anal on her - she's got to do DP .... and so on. If she won't do the more extreme stuff she's not going to work much and she'll be taking jobs for less money.

The other route is working for the 'feature' companies like VIVID and Wicked. Not as much work and money for girls going that route. Even a girl who becomes a contract pornstar won't make nearly as much money as a young chick who is willing to do anything for all he gonzo companies. But eventually the gonzo companies have done all they can do with a girl and by that time her rectum is hanging out of her ass ......... this is when the gonzo star retires from gonzo and becomes a contract girl *see Mirage/Brianna Banks, Aurora Snow etc*

This seems to be the new route for girls, make lots of money being really nasty for gonzo, become a 'name', then settle into working in features, hopefully as a contract girl. Contract girls only shoot a handful of movies a year - they don't get paid as much as people think but they do get other things such as feature dancing.

If a girl goes too extreme I think it hurts her chances of becoming a big contract star for VIVID, Digital Playground, Wicked. Taylor Rain should be a big contract girl now - she's famous now from the amazing amount of gonzo work she's done and she's girl next door pretty. She signed with Legend Video, Legend isn't on the same level as VIVID, DP and Wicked. My guess is that those companies passed on Taylor because she doesn't fit their image.

Also there's the controversial topic of interracial - girls who are after contracts and feature dancing careers are told that doing interracial will hurt their chances. There are lots of big stripclubs down South that won't book feature dancer/pornstars that have done black guys - the good old boys will not come out to see her.

Overexposure is great for the girls who are in it just to make as much money for themselves or their suitcase pimps, it means they are working a lot. For girls who have their sights on being the next Jenna or Jill Kelly overexposure isn't good. Look at Jenna Haze, she did gonzo just long enough to get well known, then 'retired' to become a contract girl with Jill Kelly, and isn't even doing boy/girl.
