    Is it XP?

You can roll your computer back a few days and restore what you had before.

          Virus Maybe?

Windows does not just 'Not Boot'.

          Did you try safe mode?

Why didn't you just put the HD in another computer and get all the data off of it, or inspect it for viruses, check the boot.ini file, event log etc.

Sounds like it's on you, not Windows.

Actually, my virus scan had just caught a worm virus and was in the process of quarantining it when the computer shit. So I"m quite certain it was a virus that did it.

That still doesn't make me feel any better.

                That sucks.
This wont help you now but for the future...I got one of these external harddrives and it's been great just to plug it in once in a while and do a backup.

i have everything backed up twice. with one back up that stays in a different location. if i ever had a total data loss, that would be the end of my business.

You know its very frightening as we become more dependent on computers for everything in our lives.

When I was at the supermarket earlier their entire debit card network had gone down across their network of thousands of stores. You should have heard people freaking out when it came time to pay and being told sorry mam you can't use a debit card its not working.

A lot of people it seems have gotten off cc cards and use debit cards, cause their were a bunch of lines where the women were flipping and bitchin about how all they had were debit cards and how else now were they supposed to pay if the cards woudn't function.

And then I was at a bank and the same type of thing. Tried cashing a check and they said their system down and everyone cashing checks could either wait patiently or come back later. People were cursing and slamming out the doors.

You reformatted? A simple chkdsk probably would havefixed it. At the worst, a $179 recovery program likely would have gotten you your data back.

Short version - buy a 2nd HDD for weekly backups.

Just hold on for a sec.. it depends on what TYPE of format.
If you just did a regular format and the actual disk itself is not physically damaged the data CAN STILL BE RECOVERED.

Email me or ask somebody for my email and i'll hunt up the proggie that will do that for you EASY.
