I'm not sure I understand something about spam...

    what is the big deal?

I'm not asking this to be sarcastic, I honestly want to know some of the issues you have with spam. People seem so militant about spam but I just don't get it.

1- Kids receiving porn in their email: I can sort of understand this one, but as a parent shouldn't you be watching while your kids is online? The Internet is not just for kids and shouldn't be looked at as a place where kids can roam unsupervised. How long does it take to check their email and delete anything from addresses you don't know? Wouldn't you want to do this anyway, just in case of viruses?

2- It's annoying: sure, but so is all the junk mail I receive in my regular mailbox. I just trash it and move on.

Instead of trying to shut people down or making stupid laws that aren't going to be effective anyway shouldn't we just choose not to do business with people who spam and use the tools available to cut down on the amount of spam you receive in your inbox?

That's just my but perhaps I'm missing something about the spam issue.

    One word: Money.

It costs the people who pay for the bandwidth money.

I'm not talking about bulkmailings here, those are fine, but people who spam, do so without authorization and cost people time and money.

It's easy enough to "just delete" it, but the truth is, someone else had to pay for it because the spammer was stealing resources to send his/her garbage.

It doesn't bother me all that much, I just filter it, but this is the reason most spam nazi's act the way they do.

well my problem with it is that the Internet is a wonderful thing, millions of people depend on email for business and personal communications.

if it was ok to spam, no stigma to it, nobody cared, EVERYBODY would spam, meaning what - 1,000 spams a day in your email box, 5,000, 10,000? Rendering email useless.
Yeah we do get a lot of spam in our real world physical mailboxes, but those people pay to mail that shit out and that is enough of an obstacle to keep it somewhat manageable.

the people who do it now are rewarded based on the fact that most webmasters both porn and mainstream are good citizens, their spams are effective because the number of spams in a persons email box are still manageable, if we all spammed their spams would be lost in the clutter, worthless.
I moved my sites to Vacares Hosting. I've saved money, my hair is thicker, lost some weight too! Thanks Sly!

there is a crackdown on all forms of spam. Some states are starting to have 'no call lists' and stuff to avoid telemarketing and junk mail.

Theres no prob with responsible mailings, but these bulkers are basically thieves and con artists.
Ever notice that pretty much everything added to the Constitution after the original was a mistake.

So you're telling me the reason the soccer moms that are bitching to their congressmen about spam is because they're upset that the spam costs them money to download it?

            Right.

Who fucking wants to get up every morning and sift thru 30, 40, 50 pieces of fucking spam to find the legit mail? Perhaps you only get a few pieces of mail a day and if that is so...of course you would not understand this. But when the time comes that it takes you 30-45 minutes to check your mail and you only had 3 legit pieces of mail in your box, maybe then you'll understand why so many people get pissed at spammers.

              Cheers -

Some things to keep in mind:

                1) The government is trying to stop illegal SPAM, IE the ones that try to get you to give them sensitive information like your bank account etc.

                2) Companies pay a fee to the government in order to send out junk mail via USPS, etc.

                3) lot of people get in excess of 100 emails per day that are unwanted. Even email adds up to bandwidth which someone has to pay for.

I don't report SPAM anymore as there's no point to it, delete does the job..

it has to do with CONCENT on CHOICE.

someone CHOOSES to go to a porn site via a link trade, search engine, ad or type in and it's THEIR CHOICE to view the material there when and where they want.

There is no CHOICE with spam.

-You could get a porn spam when surfing the internet with your grandma looking over your shoulder.
-Your kid could get a porn spam when you're not home.
-You have to take time out of your day when you don't CHOOSE to look at or think about porn to delete porn spam.

                    - and the type of people who do spam are greedy beyond belief so it's now to the point wher I have to take 1-2 hours out of my day just to delete spam emails from these assholes.

WHY SHOULD I have to spend my VALUEABLE time deleting these emails? these is no filter that will work cause I wrk in porn and have to read about porn.

Personally I am for the STRONGEST legislation against spam HUMANINALLY possible. It's just taking up and WASTING too much of my time.
This dog, is dog, a dog, good dog, way dog, to dog, keep dog, an dog, idiot dog, busy dog, for dog, 20 dog, seconds dog!

I love it when you click on the link to be taken off their list and it doesn't work or the response is "that e-mail is not in our database" or they ask you to tell them what e-mail address to take off their list and you have a zillion e-mails on forwarding so now YOU have the work of figuring out which of those addresses was the one the spam was sent to.

I also love the "here is the information you asked for" which turns out to be information you never in your life would ask for.

On the whole, though, I think there are more important things to worry about. Nobody is charging ME for the bandwidth of my spam (which has to pale in comparison to the bandwidth I log up in a typical work day).

                          good points everyone.
but I still think spam blockers/filters are the way to go.

which leads to my next question...
what are the best ways to cut down on spam?

I recently sent an email to someone from an address they didn't know and before it was delivered I had to click on a link to verify my address. Then once my email address was verified I never had to do it again. I lost the link to the service... does anyone know who does this?

Very Very Good Point Nina ...

Spam is an Annoyance ... but the real spammers are not the people who are paying $1 an email for their lists it is the people who are buying programs that are just harvesting Emails ... this is why we have laws most of them are aggainst Malicsous spammers..

There are some Nice Filters out for mail servers that can help reduce this greatly ..

First of all SleazyDream's post was pretty damm good and I basically agree with his thoughts on this subject.

Nina you said in your original post "Instead of trying to shut people down or making stupid laws that aren't going to be effective anyway" You are WAY wrong hun, they may never be able to stop spam completely, but I bet you would eat your words if YOU are 1 of the spammers they nail and make an example out of ???... Can you afford $5,000.00 fine per verified spam complaint?? (I highly doubt it) and 5 years in Prison, and it's a Felony conviction??? Lets bring this thread back up in a few months when the "spam convictions" start rolling in....

actually, I can't wait for the webmaster who gets convicted because one of their competitors spammed their program to get them in trouble?

My problem, is what is a VERIFIED spam complaint? Some stupid fuck who joined a mailing list and didn't read the terms and now bitches to his senator about it?

When you go from $0 to $50 to $1200/day it's easy to rationalize spamming. As for filters they're the only reason spam is lucrative at all right now. All it means is that you have to be good to get your mails through.

It's called a whitelist, only accept emails from people you allow or that are able to click on a link in order to verify.

Having filters is a good idea, however you will never be able to have the perfect filter. Someone will always get through, some legit mail will always get rejected.

Would you like it if snail mail destined for you got returned even though it was legit?

Put simply, why should I have to dig through a bunch of BS to get my important mail?

Having filters is a good idea, however you will never be able to have the perfect filter. Someone will always get through, some legit mail will always get rejected.

Would you like it if snail mail destined for you got returned even though it was legit?
I like the whitelist idea... sounds like a good solution.

Does anyone have a link to somewhere I can set this up?

The Internet is not just for kids and shouldn't be looked at as a place where kids can roam unsupervised. How long does it take to check their email and delete anything from addresses you don't know? Wouldn't you want to do this anyway, just in case of viruses?

but I still think spam blockers/filters are the way to go.

which leads to my next question...
what are the best ways to cut down on spam?

I recently sent an email to someone from an address they didn't know and before it was delivered I had to click on a link to verify my address. Then once my email address was verified I never had to do it again. I lost the link to the service... does anyone know who does this?
there is no way i can use a spam blocker fliter in my line of work - i wouldn't be able to get my good emails.

                                                      legislate against the spammers
the whitelist idea isn't really a filter, as I understand it.

You set up a list of known email addresses that you receive email from and that email comes through just fine.

Anyone who emails you that you don't know has to verify their email address... just like with many of the gallery submitting scripts.

Then once verified that email goes on the good list and they never have to verify their email address again.

I wish I could find a link to the site that offered this.

I will try to distinguish between what I view as illegal SPAM that should send people to jail and that which must be considered electronic bulkmail.

Illegal (my definition) forged headers if you are not willing to put your name on it should not send it. Stolen resources, stealing my mail server or yours as a relay point to send SPAM. Adult SPAM with subject lines that will fool the average SPAM filter and get opened by kids (are we suicidal)

Legal - Opt in email, unsolicited direct mail with a real from address and a REAL opt out. (Each time I try to opt out now I find more and more SPAM comming in)

We in this industry NEED to be sensitive to the adult email sent out that is not clearly marked adult so that it can be filtered out. We are arming the Neoconservatives when we allow those materials to reach kids.

I don't really have a problem with just deleting the crap I get. I get about 1000+ spam emails a day through all my domains. Alot of these are filtered directly into the trashcan or I just simply remove it.

I agree with you as far as parents should watch what their kids are doing on the internet. There are several programs that can limit what their kids can see, but do they take the initiative and install those programs on their computer and do their part to protect their children from unwanted content? No they are too lazy and feel everyone else should raise their children for them.

Now people sending me illegal content, I do complain on. Those sicko's deserve everything they can get.

I agree on that, also when people compare spam to junk mail. Imagine when you went to your mailbox everyday there was 50-100 pieces of junk mail. People would be screaming for blood. My biggest problem with spam is the porn spam thats very graphic that goes to people who dont want it. That affects all of us because you cant use the argument if you dont like dont look it when people in our industry are sticking it in their faces. Also kids get it and its irresponsible, I know its fun to throw the responsiblity to the parents . No its ours, people have to act like responsible adults or they will keep clamping down til there is no adult online porn coming out of the USA especially if w gets another four years.

It's only $35/year... so it might be worthwhile if you have one main address like I do.
