Sarah you are so right.
As a drummer in a punk rock band, I can not stress enough as to the importance of certain things. For instance, a snare tuned too high will turn me off to something immediately...In the mix, I like to here a lot of high hat, not as much kick drum and a good dry snare tuned in a mid range.
Drums are what really sets apart older recordings from newer ones. If you've listened to enough stuff, old and new, you can pretty much tell what era it was recorded just from the drum sound. They used different techniques back then, like condenser mics on the snare and fewer mics all together.
I've actually researched this quite a bit...me and the guy who records us sit around and try all kinds of stuff to get that 77' sounding snare drum, and so far we've failed. We're going in this sunday to finish our LP, I'm gonna try some new things to try to get it sounding like, for instance, any dead boys song.
