Politicians are salesmen. Most aren't even very bright individuals as we've come to see. A lot are just front pitch men representing the interests of the very wealthy and powerful sectors of our society.
People forget and fast. If you go out on the streets tomorrow and ask 100 people to list all the major highlights of what Bush promised and stated tonight, I doubt you'd find even one person who could give you a full summary of his speech. Most people probably couldn't name more than one or two things he talked about.
People like to be sold bullshit. This is hard to believe but I've come to the conclusion its just how we are. We want to perpetually believe well maybe this guy will be different, maybe he'll be an honest one. Inevitably we're allways let down and disillusioned and then resold all over again on the next turkey put in the pipeline to razzle dazzle us with how they're going to fix things.
One of the best quotes on this has to be Richard Nixon's line when he became President:
"I hope to bring dignity, honor, and integrity to the White House."

And there you have it in 200 words or less. Things simply don't go down they way it's told in history class or civics class.....let alone the way it's told in the state of the union infomercial.
