Police find 28 HIV-positive men at gay orgy
January 20 2004 at 04:45PM
Taipei - A Taiwan health official on Tuesday warned islanders against unprotected sex after disclosing that 28 people in a 92-strong gay orgy proved to be HIV-positive.
"Among the 92 young men who took part in the home party last Saturday, 14 admitted they were hospital-registered Aids patients or HIV carriers. Another 14 also tested positive to HIV, so there are 28 Aids patients or HIV carriers," Ling Ding, deputy director of the Centre for Disease Control, told a news conference.
"Test results also showed that 46 participants, including 14 HIV carriers, are infected with syphilis," he said.
"This means that half of the participants in the home party are infected with HIV or other sexually-transmitted disease. This fully shows the danger of attending such parties," he said.
Under Taiwan's Aids Prevention and Treatment Bill, anyone who knowingly spreads Aids faces up to seven years in prison.
The men, including a Japanese student and six Hong Kong men, wore only their underpants and were packed into an apartment which had been converted into a dance hall.
The apartment has a shower room, a room with a big bed and a room with lockers to store clothes.
Police found hundreds of ecstasy pills and dozens of used condoms on the floor and arrested the organisers - a gay couple - on charges of obscene behaviour. - Sapa-dpa
