Its called Organized Crime. The term Mafia with the implied meaning being the traditional Italian based groups is out of date.
In Federal law enforcement circles they often refer to it as LCN "La Cos Nostra".
The pornography industry in the US and much of the world used to be entirely controlled by Italian and Jewish organized crime families. Especially in the distribution, production and manufacturing end of things. You couldn't get into the business unless you had connections and OC partners in the background.
Most of the time, organized crime families would force companies to use their services at inflated prices. Its like in the garment industry in NYC. Open up a clothing manufacturing operation and you'll have OC guys show up telling you the companies that will be providing you all your services, like hangers, jobbers, truckers, etc. They jack their profits out that way.
That tight control started to evaporate in the late '80s and things really changed when the Net took over. It became less of a profitable business then it used to be which was one of the main reasons the grip was loosened. There were also a tremendous amount of obscenity indictments during the Meese years which changed the desire for many of the old time families to stay in it as tape prices came down along with profits and a changing marketplace. There was a lot more money to be made pushing tech penny stock IPO's and in other high end financial services deals and scams.
Most of the OC guys in the Valley aren't like you picture out of the Godfather. Some remnants of the old time families in NYC still play the part, but the Valley guys where the porn industry is heavily concentrated are low key and just businessmen with connections. You do hear about occasional violence still, but its mostly over debts owed that haven't been paid.
The Net pretty much came in so fast and furious, the old timers didn't know what hit them. Most of them are up to speed now and have their fingers in many of the bigger things out there.
OC has also expanded to includ many other nationalities involved in adult entertainment worldwide. So its just not the Italian and Jewish guido's any longer. The younger guys don't have the killing balls like the old generation did. Now its more of a financing type arrangement. We'll fund you and take a slice.
