Click on the sites you listed, scroll down to their links section and you will see they almost all link to a bunch of other review sites. And those review sites link to even more review sites.

I started building http://www.megasexplex.com to be a review site, where surfers comment on the sites, but it's just turned into a nutso banner farm sorted by genre

Why do review sites echange traffic with other review sites?
TGP's trade with other TGP's for obvious reasons but the TGP surfers are aware of the existence of other TGP's. But I always thought that a review site is considered something special and unique by the surfer. So the main goal for a review site, assuming it is a separate site and not an addition for a TGP, should be to get the traffic via SE's or PPC SE's, make the surfer interested in their site, convince him that this is a special site, and to buy a membership or bookmark it, so that when he decided to buy a membership to a paysite in future, he may visit that site again and make them a sale.

Better page rank? Some other review sites might feel they offer a better quality product, thus stealing that bookmark from one review site to another?

Probably you're right with Page Rank

, I am not a SE guy so I keep forgetting about it.
Sure some sites may steal the bookmark link from others, but you'll never know if you will steal, or rather someone else will steal for you

And when the surfer notices that there are many review sites and they may even have different ratings for the same sites, he will become a worse surfer.
Good surfer = someone who thinks that your ( review ) site in unique and the best.
That's at least what I thgought.
