                                                  If you've seen as many con movies as I have, you realize that almost all of them involve an unexpected con that's only revealed in the last moments, and this is no exception. I think they should have gotten an actor with more mileage than Edward Burns to play the lead con artist, who just looked too green for the job (I'm thinking instead some actor like Andy Garcia, Treat Williams, or Joe Mantegna, the latter having already done a great con artist role in the classic House of Games ).

                                                  While a supporting actor, Dustin Hoffman steals the movie, doesn't he? This is his best role in many years, and he totally got into it, seeming pretty scary for a physically small guy (not quite as scary as Ben Kingsley was in Sexy Beast, but Hoffman is playing a much smarter character who is scary for that reason.

                                                  The movie rewards with one surprise after another, sending the plot on a twisty course to the denouement, which any student of the con story should be able to anticipate, and the fact that when the expected happens you aren't disappointed shows what a great little movie this is.

                                                          Nominated, but didn't win. Of course, he already has an Oscar for Gandhi, and was nominated for his role in Bugsy.
