Good friend as a housemate - bad idea?

I just found housing for me and a good friend of mine, and even though the place is a total dump (in a ghetto, looks like it used to be a crackhouse), it's quite large (4 bedrooms, balcony, shed, large living room, etc) and cheap ($150 a month - I shit you not).

Now, what I'm wondering about is if it's a good idea to get a friend as a housemate. We've been good/best friends for almost 10 years - quite a bit, considering we're both 21 - and know eachother pretty well. Right now I'm living with three very christian people, and he's living with his parents, so this would definitely be an improvement.
However, I'm afraid this might be dangerous to our friendship, and besides that, my girlfriend is totally and completely opposed to the idea (something to do with me and him getting drunk quite often when we're together).

So, anyone got ideas/advice on this?

I've had both kinds of roommates... Strangers met through the papers, and friends I've known for years. If you're gonna have a roommate, it's definitely easier and more fun to do it with a friend.

Being compatible friends does not mean you'll be compatible roomates.

Living with someone is very, very, very hard unless you are both easy going to the max and have all the responsibilities worked out.

I did the same thing in my early 20's. My girlfriend, her girlfriend, her brother, her girlfriends boyfriend rented a house together. It quickly turned into a Friends episode gone wrong and everyone was on each others case over the most ridiculous stuff.

I moved into a cool apartment in Marina Del Ray by the water after that and was in Heaven to have my peace and solitude again.

Well, this will only be two guys, in a rather large house, so it won't be that crowded. Besides that, we both like the same kinds of music, movies, tv shows, etc. Not the same kind of chicks though, which is a plus

i've seen many good friendships go sour over moving in with one another. on the other had, i've seen them make even better friendships. make sure you're positive you can see him all the time. almost like marriage, lol.

Between the ages 12 and 18 we spent most of our time together, hanging out just about every day. We drank together, went out together, got drunk together, found chicks together (not shared, although I did steal some of his girlfriends), watched movies together - everything. Almost like marriage, actually ;)

If it is that cheap, do it alone. I assure you that spending 24/7 with anyone will kill the relationship.

I don't remember who said it, but "Hell is an eternity with one's friends." Or something like that.

They don't rent it out to single people. Huge housing shortage over here, waiting lists for houses are 2+ years. If I wouldn't get it with him, I would have to share it with strangers.

You will have no problem as long as he can always come up with his half of the expenses. It sounds like fun

I would only have a housemate who was a friend. Who wants to live with strangers?

The Netherlands. Normally it would be about 10 times that, at the very least, but I got lucky.

Don't do it, you might become enimies before long!!!

It's best to have your own place, there won't be anyone there that you don't want there....

I don't even live with my girlfriend, she just stay's over a few nights a week...we get along better that way.. Same with friends, if you hang out too much you start to have arguments over stupid shit..

It's not always like that...but maybe you should look at your options.......

Not an option, unfortunately. Due to the housing shortage over here you are basically screwed if you don't want to buy a very expensive house.
