I'm very involved in Rottweiler Rescue (have been for over 2 yrs now), and we adopted our rottie from a shelter. He was only 10 months old when we got him, neutered, AKC Registered, housebroken, obedience trained and knew a few basic 'security' commands also. When we adopted him, his previous owners actually had a duffel bag full of his items, AKC papers, his original bill of sale from the breeder (which is great info to have, in the event of later hip dysplasia or other genetic problems), his vet records, his food dishes, and alot of his toys.
Granted not every dog adopted from a shelter will come with all of these items, but they usually make up for that in an over abundance of love for their new owners.
