ugh yeah, that's the feedback I've gotten from my swedish friend and I'm a bit worried about moving back home... to move my biz home only to not be able to deposit my checks is scary... I thought with EU and internet that sweden would have become a bit more 'international' - guess that was the wrong assumption uh?

Why can't you keep a US bank account open and have your checks wired by sponsors directly into it? I mean you can pretty much use VISA or Mastercard everywhere, so get a check card. That's what I was going to do when I left the country. And you may well be able to access your chosen bank via online banking. Hope you're feeling better and not so sick anymore too.
