Selectively reading again? This headline from the article seems a lot less positive than your subject line: "U.S. ROLE ALLEGED IN SADDAM'S RISE" (go to the dictionary and look up "alleged").
Once again, you LEAP to believe anything negative about the US, even if it is just alleged.SIG TOO BIG! Maximum 120x60 button and no more than 3 text lines of DEFAULT SIZE and COLOR. Unless your sig is for a GFY top banner sponsor, then you may use a 624x80 instead of a 120x60.Comment

"At the time, Saddam was a Baath operative studying law in Cairo, one of the places where the CIA chose to plan the coup, Morris says. In fact, he claims the former Iraqi ruler castigated by U.S. President George W. Bush as one of history's most "brutal dictators," was actually on the CIA payroll in those days
U.S. ROLE ALLEGED IN SADDAM'S RISE
Five years later, in 1968, Morris says the CIA encouraged a palace revolt among Baath Party elements led by long-time Saddam mentor Ahmed Hassan al-Bakr, who would turn over the reins of power to his ambitious protege in 1979.
"It's a regime that was unquestionably midwived by the United States, and the (CIA's) involvement there was really primary," Morris said.
His version of history is a far cry from current American rhetoric about Iraq -- a country that top U.S. officials say has been liberated from decades of tyranny and given the chance for a bright democratic future without making mention of America's own alleged role in giving birth to the regime.Comment

Did you ever date a girl that was great at first, then turned to a stalker / bitch two years later? Yes, we supported him. But people change......
Didnt he spend a good deal of time in Egypt for assassinating a few people?
We knew he was a psycho when we installed him.Comment

No kidding. But Americans refuse to see the obvious. From Ho Chi Min to Noriega to Saddam....time and time again the CIA installs dictators covertly only so we can bomb the hell out of them a few years later overtly.Originally posted by [Labret]

The American War Machine *specifically sets up and creates* its own enemies. Meanwhile, the massess are manipulated into believing all the "patirotic" war propaganda like so many drunken monkies.
George Orwell predicted it all in his classic, 1984, how former allies suddenly and very conveniently become enemies of the state...Comment

They go to war for extended periods of time and everytime a new enemy is encountered they tell the people.
for example.
'THE UNITED STATES HAVE ALWAYS BEEN AT WAR WITH SYRIA.'
just because you dont get the reference, dont try to point out MY IGNORANCE mistakingly as your own.
like Dennis Miller, not my fault you dont get my references.

Old news yes - but also BARELY REPORTED NEWS.Originally posted by foreverjason
old news..
CNN and Fox News have been beating the war drums 24/7 for the past ten months; thousands of hours of constant "Saddam is evil" propaganda. I have yet to see even a single 5-second spot on either of these stations that detail even half of the information in this Reuters article.
Where are the Special Reports of how the CIA bankrolled Saddam and the Baathist rise to power? Where are the report of how George Bush Sr., while director of the CIA, armed Saddam to the teeth. Where are the flashy Fox Graphics and Bill O'Rielly rhetoric about how Cheney's oil company did business with Saddam after the Gulf War?!?!?Comment

No. It's the exact opposite. Americans by the millions jump to the conclusion that because it's on TV (CNN, Fox) then it must be true. Print is the only media left where the truth can be found.Originally posted by UnseenWorld
I realize that, but you are still jumping to the conclusion that if it's in print, it must be true.
The question then becomes - which books? Where does the truth lie?
The answer: seek out those books that are being actively banned by the State. That is where truth lies.
"The Secret Team" by L. Fletcher Prouty has the distinction of being one of the handful of books that has been deleted from the Library of Congress. It is a candid history of the CIA, its methods and true operational philosophy, written by a man who was there. Hmmmm. I wonder why the US government would actively ban this book? I thought we were living in a free democracy. Anyway, that is just an example of one book that tells it like it is.
Btw, Fletcher Prouty spent 9 of his 23 year military career in the Pentagon (1955-1964): 2 years with the Secretary of Defense, 2 years with the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and 5 years with Headquarters, U.S. Air Force. In 1955 he was appointed the first "Focal Point" officer between the CIA and the Air Force for Clandestine Operations per National Security Council Directive 5412. He was Briefing Officer for the Secretary of Defense (1960-1961), and for the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Prouty was technical advisor to Oliver Stone on JFK. The character that Donald Sutherland plays in that film is based on Prouty.
Prouty's banned books and articles can be found at:

i can see them scrolling across CNN now.

Different time, different era, different rules.
Back when the CIA was allegedly "installing dictators" around the globe, we were in the middle of a cold war, and we were trying to stop the spread of communism.
The philosophy back then was "He might be a son of a bitch, but he's OUR son of a bitch"
If we didn't support those governments, the Soviets would have, and then they would have had the basing rights, and the oil rights, etc etc etc.
It was the lesser of 2 evils so to speak.
We were allies with them because we wanted to defeat the soviets and communism. The same way we were allies with Stalin when we were trying to get rid of Hitler. It was a marriage of convenience and necessity, don't go making it into more than it was.

The allegations of a single person does not mean he speaks the truth and in addition he needs a hook to sell his books. I have seen more than one documentary on the rise of the Baath party and the rise of Saddam to power that indicate Morris does not speak the truth. When you're running down my country hoss...you're walking on the fighting side of me!

That's a tired old line that I used to believe but have come to see the fallacy of it. Why didn't we fight communisim with "democracy"? I thought that was what the ideological fight against communism was all about - to preserve and promote democracy? Instead of supporting and/or nurturing democracies in the middle east and elswhere to "fight communism" - we did the exact opposite. The CIA overthrew the fledgling democracy in Iran and installed the Shah, one of the most brutal dictators of all. We did the same all over South America - overthrow democracies and installed dictators. In Iraq, instead of supporting democratic forces, we bankrolled the Baathists and Saddam.Originally posted by Lenny2

None of this - the cold war or the current war on terror has anything to do with promoting "Democracy". Instead, it has everything to do with promoting America's #1 export business - WAR!!!
That's what it is about. That is what it has always been about.Comment
