Oh wait, now I see what DRM is, read on http://www.instantdrm.com/Site_Questions_DRM.asp ...

But one thing I wonder is, what model do you guys recommend on a paysite with monthly memberships? And what if someone buys a 3 month membership to my site, will this DRM thing close their access to my clips after only 1 month?

Nopes you have control over the length and type of files to be
valid in DRM you set this before you start encoding the files with
              DRM.

Correct this encoding is done on the fly all you do is upload your
files, put in the settings you like and you download the encoded
                  files again to your server.

you can also for example encode files that only can be watched
                  a certain number of times.

the on the fly thing I mentioned is of course only if you use instantDRM
                    or a similar service.

sounds good... And this works with the CCBill signup system? So that a person who sign up for 3 months with CCBill can download this videoclip, and view it as much as he wants for 3 full months, and then if he gets rebilled, what happens then? Will it work further on 3 new months or do I have to configure something manually?

If he cancels and don't get rebilled, he will not be able to view the video again, unless he signs up again, right? Wil some kind of message pop up and tell him he has to sign up again to view the video, if he try to view it witout a valid membership?

I have Glo-Bill as backup processor, will it work with both CCBill and Glo-Bill?

And what about members that I add manually?

makes sense. that and a lot of microsoft code is re-used, and poorly enhanced. just makes it worse and worse as time goes on.

and what's this about backwards-incompatibility and bloatware? i didn't even think about that, but it makes sense. i wish more of my hardware worked with unix, but i'm looking into alternatives.

how good is video editing and stuff with a mac? i know the machine is more expensive and a little slower, but doing most of my day-to-day work on a *nix box and my editing/publishing on a mac sounds very tempting. keep a windows box around for games, and the rare occasional compatibility issues.

and a big issue is, has anyone gotten samba to run? tried it once, failed. i think part of that may have been redhat though

basically i'm looking for a lan server that is basically network storage, and a print server. looking to install the promise sx4000 raid card and 4 ide drives in raid 5. it's linux-compatible, so it *should* work with FreeBSD.

the most impressive server i've ever worked with is the as/400 tho. the pure power in those machines is amazing. where i used to work they had a fairly small one, and it ran 30 retail stores and 2 large wholesale outlets over digital and phone lines to dumb terminals. rapidly. and to my knowledge, no one has *ever* been able to make a virus for the as/400. the machine is so anal about it's hardware control that apparently a virus is impossible

that and the damn thing will send you an email when it thinks it has hardware issues, and tells you what to do to fix it. some of them will even ask IBM for help on their own

If you plan to run paysites on windows you NEED a pricy bit of software called WebQuota. It's THE software to deal with passwords on windows. Nothing is even close to it. I've been running that software since 1997 and it's still really the only game in town.
Where do I find this software? Anyone? Need an URL

Thank you Yes I will try and see how it goes now with Windows, hopefully I will get everything in order again, now it's only some cgi and MySQL stuff that needs to be updated... And then I'll need to work on the security of the server, and the security of my videoclips... And get my webcam up and streaming

Doeas anyone know what HTML code to place on a page to make the stream show up? ( In .wmv) Maybe so that it automatically detects the users internet speed and shows the stream in the right quality?

Aha, thanks... Actually I remember CCBill told me I needed Authentix on my server...

Do I need both Authentix and WebQuota?

Edit: Forget that question, I see Authentix comes with the WebQuota package
